I'm of the opinion that "China would have no choice in the matter but to play an arbitrary/middleman part in case superpower 1 and 2 starts shooting at one another. A face off between superpower 1 and 2 is not out of the realms of possibility you know given how the war hawks who started it all isn't about to lose face over this. Scary thing you know if the two starts to shoot if out. Beijing, it was said, had dispatched a couple of Aegis class frigates to the area recently and my speculation is that she had been informed way before hand by Putin as to what's going to be happening. Those frigates, I trust, are there to be a go between in case superpower 1 puts on its usual arrogant face and dares Putin, who still have some ten thousand nukes in his arsenals, to try it. They don't realize that after the Ukraine that Putin is a wounded tiger and that wounded tigers will bite to kill in order to survive.

The US and the west have created a Frankenstein that they failed to control and is now running amuck. Right from the start, the west had wanted to destroy the legitimate secular government of President Assad. The west have shamelessly allied themselves with terror regimes such as Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar, turkey and Jordan  in order secure lucrative oil and energy resources, and to contain Iran and Russian influence. Syria, although not blessed with the oil richness like those of the gulf states, holds an important geopolitical  position in the Middle East. Opposed to Zionism and western imperialism, and refusing to submit to the whims and fancies of the west, she was targeted for destruction. Israel is only too happy to see a weakened Syria knocked off of all its teeth. But Syria is a long time ally of Russia and the latter's only military post in the Middle East. This is nothing compared to the presence of overwhelming military bases of the US and the west in the region.

From the invasion and regime changes from Afghanistan, Iraq, Sudan, Libya, to name a few, the consequences have nothing but tragedies. The world initially thought that with Obama elected to had the US, the world would see less wars and more peace. And Obama was even prematurely awarded the noble peace prize! But the world soon lean that Obama is no different from his predecessor(s) with some arguing that he did even worse in the killing of innocent people.

As it now stands, Russia has played the chess game well. The US and the west,  now forced to eat humble pies, find themselves having to accept the legitimate government of Syria to continue its role to destroy ISIS and hit to insist on regime change.  They now work on "on a transitional plan" to oust Assad. Whateve, this is a MAJOR turn around of policy BUT does not mean that the war against Syria has ceased. The plan is bog down the genuine Russian effort to wipe Syria's western funded and armed terror groups that are now rampaging across both Syria and Iraq. The FSA, touted to be a "moderate group" by the west, is actually part of the terror groups that mutilating Syria.

Russia and China have good reasons to be concerned for thousands of their nationals are fighting in Syria and if they return home, they would be used by the western powers to launch violent terror attacks.  This western created Frankenstein, a mushroom of proxy forces, if not contained and eliminated, would rage across the Middle East, Central Asia up to the borders of China and beyond.

Russia is acting wisely to contain this prairie fire.

The war is far from over as the US wants world domination and the specter of WWIII still looms large. But hopefully, a victory over terrorism led by Russia (and China to some extent), would be a game changer and lead to an end to the US-West-NATO's meddling in Ukraine.
