Here! Here! Gtnba!

You're absolutely right.  The only people the Japanese students and teacher shamed was themselves.

Furthermore, it was completely unnecessary for the students to stage such a protest.  What would have been more effective was to kick the Japanese out of the dance, and continue having fun.  Let the school authorities deal with the tasteless costumes (especially that of the teacher, who should have known better).

Why is it that when a Japanese person does something stupid, every Chinese leaps to the conclusion that they're trying to "shame China"?

I get sick and tired of this paranoia!

I live in Hainan, and every time I take a stroll on the beach, I see Chinese men doing what is basically the same thing as the Japanese costume at the dance.  One man will lie on the sand, and his buddies will build a sand sculpture around him.  They will give him large breasts and genitals that would make an elephant proud.

Maybe they're trying to shame me, as a foreigner?!!!  Maybe we should stage a protest!  Whaddaya think?
