Comparing the mainland China and Hong Kong. I wonder which people have the better English standard now. Mainlanders seem to be catching up these few years. Is that the case ?

Of course, Hong Kong

A lot more of the people in the general public (such as shop keepers, waitresses, employees at the bus station, train station, airport, doctors, nurses, etc. etc.) in Hong Kong can speak English than in mainland China.

China is catching up, but mostly only with university students and maybe folks in Beijing like taxi cab drivers (because of 2008 Olympics).  China is still lagging with hospital employees and especially workers in bus stations and train stations.

You can travel easily in HOng Kong knowing no Chinese at all.  In China, you had better take a translator with you if you don't know any Chinese.
