China has lowered the threshold for permanent residency "green cards" for foreigners serving in some government-affiliated institutes and scientific and research centers.

The green card system was introduced in China in 2004. Foreigners who meet a set of criteria can stay in the country for an unlimited period and enter without a visa.

Would you like to apply for China's 'Green Card'?

And how many people will benefit from this? A handful at the most, no use at all for those that have offered many years of their working lives to China and are not allowed to stay after they retire

I think that China should really implemented a system where not only "top gun" foreigners gain access to green cards. Some people have dedicated years of their life, as futsanglung says rightfully, to working and raising families here. Some, if married to a chinese national, might be able to get a spouse visa after retirement but this doesn't grant them the right t a permement residence. Others will face a worst situation having to leave.

It can't hurt to apply. When I move there I might as well.
If capitalism promotes innovation and creativity then why aren't scientists and artists the richest people in a capitalist nation?

I am told 600,000 people applied for a Chinese Green Card and only about 4,000 made it. I am not really sure about the figures but it shows how smart and clever the Chinese are. Wonder if I also have to wait till 74 before I get one but I did wish I had one.
