The reason Abe wants to meet Xi so badly is because he knows when the time comes to lay down the cards, in matters that pertain to East Asia and Japan, China has the royal flush. Resistance is futile, and suicidal. Time to give unto China that things that belongs to China, for good. Threats of bringing war to China ring hollow in the face of overwhelming Chinese superiority within the sphere of its power and influence. It is like challenging a lion in his lair, daring the lion to be its lunch.
Xi has been extremely decent towards all the countries that threaten to interdict, shoot, and sink Chinese planes and ships, in China's own sovereign or international air space and waters, on the pretext that they are threats to them, who are in fact the real aggressors. Self-defense and defense of national sovereignty is a crime, to the invaders, it seems. Threats that Japanese occupation of Chinese islands will be fought with nuclear arms against Chinese defenders may sound heckuvamachismo, but to China, thankfully, these are just empty threats. If China begins to take them seriously, Japan should be extremely, extremely worried.
