The purpose of a hunger strike ala Gandhi is to prove to the government, and to the public, that one's conviction is stronger than the conviction of the government, and that regardless of the consequences, even of dying of starvation, one will prove one's point by refusing all food.  Of course, it is not advisable to do such a silly thing.  But given that he has vowed not to eat until the government relents, now that he does eat, it could only mean his conviction isn't as real as he wanted the public to believe.

Compared to this mini-fast of 4.5 days, the longest hunger strike recorded was that of Bhagat Singh, who ended his hunger strike on the 116th day, on October 5, 1929.  He demanded equal rights for British and Indian political prisoners.  The British at that time were known for their police violence on colonial subjects.  Bhagat Singh vowed to take revenge for the death of Lala Lajpat Rai, a Punjabi leader who questioned the Simon Commission's findings, since it did not include a single Indian among its members while supposedly reporting on the political scene in the Punjab.  Lajpat Rai was hit on his head several times when his peaceful protest was attacked by the British police, and died 17 days later.  The sticks or batons that the British police used could be as long as 5 feet, so the blows were meant not just to hurt, but sometimes, to be lethal.

Hunger strikes, by the way, are associated with the British Empire's extremely bad treatment of its colonials.  And civil disobedience, as practiced by Mahatma Gandhi, was directed against British colonial rule.  So, before these sophomoric students undertake hunger strikes and protests on behalf of their colonial masters, they should read up on the history of the means they employ, and understand that they should be on the side of those who assert Chinese sovereignty over Hong Kong, than those who demand Western colonial rule over them, which their ancestors would never ever agree to.

Those who are in favor of British colonial rule have no business going on hunger strikes, for after all, they really do wish to wallow in the largesse of their colonial masters, and live like a hog afterwards.
