Dr Kotnis was one of five doctors sent to China to help the Chinese Communist Party fight the war against Japanese invaders. He joined the Eighth Route Army under Chairman Mao Zedong who welcomed him warmly. Dr Kotnis worked very hard: during a long, intense battle he performed about 70 operations in a row without any sleep. His superhuman sacrifices supporting the Chinese valiant war against Japan took its toll and he died in 1942. "The army has lost a helping hand," mourned Mao Zedong,"the nation has lost a friend. Let us always bear in mind his internationalist spirit."

There is a statue commemorating this great Indian hero and internationalist fighter in Hebei today. The Chinese people will never forget him.
