Without justice, the reform campaign will fail, warns a commentary in People's Daily, the flagship newspaper of the Communist Party of China (CPC), on Wednesday.

Poverty is not socialism, nor is a growing wealth gap. The success of China's further reform campaign hinges on whether fairness and justice can be reflected, the commentary said.

The two elements are key for gathering public recognitio ...

>China's reform drive was launched amid a stumbling and underdeveloped economy in the wake of the disastrous Cultural Revolution (1966-1976).<

This massive lie has been repeated for over 30 years. From 1966 till 1976 the Chinese population increased by about 300 million people. Why the big increase? Because people thought they were living in a "disastrous" economy? Or because they saw a bright future where every Chinese has a chance to prosper together as a whole, though at a slower pace? Or because they knew, as the UN World Health Organization knew, that China's living standards had risen far above other countries of similar size and pre-WW2 economic conditions, so that the average life expectancy managed to soar from about 30 years in pre-liberation days to over 65 by 1976? That the rice hybrids popularized during the Cultural Revolution had helped China attain grain sufficiency, and the widespread use of rice fields to rear fish had given China a great source of protein, besides making China the greatest fresh water fish producer in the world?

It was during this period that China became famous not merely for its modern defense weapons which were achieved without assistance from the West or the Soviet Union, but also rapid industrialization in the countryside with about 10% annual GDP growth WITHOUT making slaves of migrants who were forced to leave their homes for the cities after Deng dismantled their communes.

If anyone is stupid enough to believe that a US president would go to China to establish diplomatic relations because China was a failed state with a "disastrous economy", or because Nixon went to Beijing out of the sheer goodness of his heart, then there's nothing more to say.

If anyone is so brain-dead as to believe that the vast majority of Third World nations voted for China in the UN - and return the Security Council seat to China - because the country was going down the drain, then there's nothing more to say.

Only a congenital idiot could believe that SEATO was dismantled and hordes of Southeast Asian leaders made their way to Beijing to see Chairman Mao before he passed away because China was a failed state, a country with a "weak and stumbling economy."

I will not say more, as the pro-Deng zombies here would surely censor this posting - such is their fear of the truth even after 30 years of massive, constant propaganda aided by their foreign masters.
