My favorite Chinese philosoper Chuang Tzu  (circa 450 BCE) dreamed he was a butterfly.  When he awoke he said  in effect:  maybe it's the other way around;  maybe  the butterfly is now dreaming he is Chuang Tzu.  (How can one be sure about that???)

Yes

How do you know you're not lying asleep somewhere at this very moment and THIS is all a dream. American indians also ponder this on peyote.

TO AHCHOO--jOURNEY TO THE wEST

Re  the question posed in your first sentence,  my answer is

"you don't".  Chuang Tzu  would be proud of you.

As for the Indians,  may I suggest that we go find them and ask what conclusions their pondering has yielded.  Who knows,  they might be willing to show us the way.
