Academic Pressure Affects Student Health
2015-12-29

In this day and age,in the context of an unprecedentedly fast developing world, having the blues, feeling a little anxious, or getting stressed from time to time is a part of life. In particular, all of the changes experienced in college can be very stressful. When these things start to interfere with students' daily lives and their ability to function normally, it could be more serious than we realize.

Pressure, our body's instinctive response to life's demands, plays a pivotal role in helping us react appropriately when threatened or when our balance of everyday lives is disrupted. Stress can also help motivate us and even help protect us. Thus feeling stressed is not abnormal. Nevertheless,it is unwholesome to be besieged by too much stress, which is frequently found among college students.

Today most students on campus are reported to suffer from stress resulted by various factors like parents' expectations, class assignments, finals, graduation dissertations,post-graduation future, job interviews, relationships, social activities and so on,among which academic pressure plays the lead.

Students who feel stressed out on a regular basis tend to face greater health problems, which could negatively interfere with their relationships and everyday life. For example, students are usually bombarded by great amounts of homework assigned by their teachers and at the same time they have a wide array of extracurricular activities and other needs of attending social activities, therefore they have to squeeze out time from their precious and limited sleeping time to work on their homework, trying to finish it before the deadline. However, staying up late into night has vicious impact on students' physical health like memory loss and lack of focus in class. In the long run,the immunocompetence of sleep-deprived students would decrease gradually and their metabolism would slow down, entailing other hazards of catching up some diseases. Also, the sedentary lifestyles of students overly occupied in academic work with insufficient exercise, can give rise to pains in the neck, shoulders and spinal cord in particular. Moreover, lack of sleep and exercise can lead to feelings of depression and exhaustion, needless to say its bad effect on students' moods and emotion. In addition, the pressure of not being able to hand in assignments on time and anxiety of preparing for an incoming test renders individuals vulnerable to go through their lives with a healthy mindset. And failure to pass the tests can interfere with their confidence and self-esteem. That way, their normal social activities and relationship with parents or partners would face troubles. Some even turn to alcohol or cigarettes to reduce the stress, which is apparently not helpful at all.

To sum up,most of this generation is being excessively consumed by pressure coming from all areas. If not handled appropriately, we would have a hard time adjusting our stressful life.
