Speak English Right - 1:2:17

You can go listen to this lesson at http://www.ximalaya.com/46641376/album/4057748

Good morning.

Today I’ll teach you two words that are sometimes confused by English learners. Notice how each word is used. Sometimes as a verb and sometimes as a noun.

Words

beat

win

Beat means “to overcome (an opponent).”

‘Beat’ can also mean ‘tired’.

Win means “to achieve victory in.” Do not use win in place of beat.

NONSTANDARD: The Tigers won against the Yankees in the final game. The subject here is focused on ’The Tigers’.

CORRECT: The Tigers (Detroit baseball team) beat the Yankees (New York City baseball team) in the final game. The subject here is focused on ‘who they beat’ which was, ‘the Yankees’.

Practice

Li Na beat her opponent every time.

The football team won all of their games.

The runner ran so long that he was really beat after the race.

The Lakers won all of their home games.

The Lakers beat all of their opponents.

The Bulls beat the Lakers last year.

The little dog slept for hours. He seemed really beat.

Notice that when something is ‘beat’, it usually just means that they are very tired. If they have been ‘beaten’ then, they lost a game of they’ve been hurt in some way.

That’s all for today.

Goodbye for now.

I hope you have a wonderful day!
