I    lost  my  sister  when  she  left  for  America  twenty  years  ago  . We  met  for  2  or  3  times  all  these  years .As  little  girls  ,  we  quarrel   for  trivial  things  ,  like  candies  and  clothes  .   Later  we  became  good friends  . She  wrote sweet  letters  as  I  was  a  young  girl  . It  was a  pity  that  we  parted  virtually  since  she  went  to  university  when  I  was  fifteen  .  Later  I  went  into  college  while  she  graduated  from  it  .  Then  she  got  married   and  went  to  America  with  her  husband  .  I  lost  a  good  friend  and  companion  .  I  often  wished  we  could  live  in  the  same  city  when  we  grew  up ,  that  my  sister  could  be  my  side  whenever    I   need  advice  and  shelter .  But no,  I  was  left  alone  to  struggle  up  to  maturity .

I  got  to  know  her  better  through  the  letters  she  wrote  home  from  that  far-away  land  .  I  saw  her attending  language  schools  learning  better  English  ,  I   know  she  became  a  certificated  nurse  working  in  a  hospital ,  and  now  she  is  a  technical  specialist  in  Maryland .  But  what  impressed  me  most  is  her  courage  and  dedication  for  her  love  and  family .  She  never  complained  about  the  life  she  choosed,  instead,  she  really  enjoyed  it  .  She  talked  about  barbeques ,tentings ,fishings ,  journeys ,  baby-nursing  details , and  family  anicodotes  in  her  letters .

She  came  back  to  see  me  at  my  wedding ,  and  when  my  baby  was  born .  Now  my  nephew's  going  to  attend  college  and  become  a  university  student ,  but  she's  still  young  and  vigiourous .  I  don't  know  how  she  manage  to  do  it  .  She  will  come  back  to  China  to  meet  us    this  summer .  I'm  looking  forward  to  a  family  reunion  and  a  nice  taik  with  my  sister  soon  .

A  piece  of  truth  about  life  is  that  those  we  care  most  will  not  meet  us  everyday  while  those   surround  us  are  what  we  secretly  hope  to  avoid . But  perhaps  it  is  the  remoteness  of  long  distance  that  helps  to  keep  the  expectation  always  alive  .

ColinSpeakman: That is very thoughtful and I assume came as a surprise? Sometimes, surprises are nice!
