US not cured of racism, it's a part of our DNA - Obama

USA President Obama has finally come around and has publicly acknowledged the truth that every rational person has known for long. There is very little front page coverage of this in the media in the West. I found this on the TimesofIndia website. He is quoted as follows in a news report from AP.

"Racism, we are not cured of it," Obama said. "And it's not just a matter of it not being polite to say nigger in public. That's not the measure of whether racism still exists or not. It's not just a matter of overt discrimination. Societies don't, overnight, completely erase everything that happened 200 to 300 years prior."

Obama's remarks came during an interview out on Monday with comedian Marc Maron for his popular podcast, where crude language is often part of the discussion.

The president said while attitudes about race have improved significantly since he was born to a white mother and black father, the legacy of slavery "casts a long shadow and that's still part of our DNA that's passed on."

While it would appear to be a first honest step in addressing the issue, it is, sadly, by a Powerless, Puppet President who can speak him mind a bit more freely nearing the end of his final term when he is a lame duck anyway. There is nothing he can do about the whole thing, and it is not as if he was unaware of the problem until yesterday. This seems to be a part of the strategy of making proper noises when one is no longer expected to do anything about it.

It is also interesting that he 'explains' that societies don't change overnight, which was something he seemed to forget when he targets other countries - on the issue of gay rights or whatever civil rights. He was well known for his saying he had 'no patience' regarding Russia in lagging behind on rights for gays, just a short few weeks after some states in the USA gave them the right to marry!!
