A meteorologist from Shanghai has devoted herself to research on the connection between health and the weather for the past several years to help improve the lives of many people in the region.

Peng Li, 39, is currently a senior engineer at Shanghai Meteorological Bureau. She was born into a worker's family and grew up in Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture, central China's Hunan province.

Though not well-educated, her parents supported her studies since she was a child and encouraged her to go to college.

With a curiosity to study the daily weather, Peng was admitted to the Department of Atmospheric Science of Nanjing University in 1997, and then went to Peking University to pursue her master's and doctor's degrees.

On completion of her education, she began her work at Shanghai Meteorological Bureau in 2007. Four years later, the organization built a special laboratory to conduct research on the connection between the climate, the atmospheric environment and health, and Peng joined the team as a junior technician.

The platform was a success and the laboratory developed innovative research methods and simulators.

In order to benefit more households and play a role in disease prevention, Peng's team went to hospitals and schools in Shanghai to give lectures, and issued brochures.

At present, the laboratory works in cooperation with departments in education, health, civil affairs and other fields to provide risk forecast services for meteorology-affected diseases such as heatstroke and respiratory problems.

Their work was confirmed by the local Shanghai government and recently won the Shanghai Science and Technology Progress Award.

Being involved in the health system of the city, Peng feels honored. As society demands more and more accurate and efficient weather forecasting, Peng says she will keep learning and innovating, and devote herself to serving more citizens and ensuring them a healthy and better life in the future.
