China one step closer to the moon
Why do we want to go to the
moon
?
* For the free "Moon Cake"
* For "face" and prestige, to show off to the world that we can do it too
* Purely scientific purposes, it doesn't even help with astro-navigation
* For military purposes only, a lunar laser beam will come in handy to measure or to blind
* For mining naturally occurring HELIUM-3
In 10, at most 20 years from now, HELIUM-3 will be the U3O8 (yellow cake) of the future. It doesn't matter that one doesn't exactly understand why we need HELIUM-3 just yet. Back in 1421, the Ming Dynasty didn't understand enough to send settlers to the Americas.
HELIUM-3 is produced in a thermal-nuclear, or better still, a hydrogen bomb explosion. But the lunar surface is a rich source of naturally occurring HELIUM-3.
Let's hear it from all Chinese, scream at the top of your voice at Beijing so they hear, we want:
HELIUM-3
HELIUM-3
HELIUM-3

Flags
Hey, if the Americans went first and planted their flag, doen't that mean the Helium 3 is on their territory?
Kinda like the Russians and their Polar exercise, I trink.

Constructive
Nice comment. Thanks for entering into debate.

Distribution of 14 usable elements
QUOTE:
He quoted Vice-Premier Zeng Peiyan's words, asking all participants to continue working hard to guarantee the project a complete success.
...
The
Moon
orbiter, Chang'e I, will provide 3D images of the Moon's surface, probe the
distribution of 14 usable elements on the
Moon
, study lunar microwaves and estimate the thickness of the Moon's soil, earlier reports said.
We need a rover equipped with a state-of-art spectrometer.
Go China go! To the stars, through diligence and hard work.

Well done
Thanks for the support, Chair. I am sure Beijing recognises the enormous significance of landing on the
moon
and harvesting HELIUM-3.
When U3O8 price rises another 1000%, when the world is a colder place and energy is scarce, you will hear the cry for HELIUM-3! It is the coal, the crude oil and the yellow cake of the future, at most twenty years from now. And my-oh-my isn't it an efficient fuel!
And you hear it from Cestmoi and Chairman here and now in 2007.

The USA was there almost 40 years ago. China is so far behind.
Does this mean that the Chinese are 40 years behind in intelligence as well?

in a way, YES. the Chinese are behind 40 years.
by the same calculation, the yankee must be about 3000 years behind the Chinese (conservatively) in civilisation.NO.....KFC is not a civilisation, they are just your artery-busters if you are not careful.talk about cheap lives.

That is one hell of a reply, mypanida.
I wish I had thought up that one.

I think that's as intelligent as he gets.
Going to the
Moon
won't mean China "owns" Helium 3 deposits. For one thing the US got there first, so if you want to talk about planting flags they would have a right to it.
But more importantly, international law says that resources on bodies like the
moon
are for the world to use, not individual countries to grab at. If a country like China or the US tried to say it had exclusive rights over the Moon's resources, it could start not just global but inter-stellar resource wars.
Let's be sensible about this - exploit the Solar System's bounty
together
for the benefit of everyone on the planet.

Hate to throw a spanner in the works...
... but has there been confirmation of the Helium-3 deposits on the
Moon
? There was some interesting theories about ice being on the dark side of the
moon
. Heck, I remember Arthur C. Clarke writing a few lines in his book 2061about that idea - but provided to be fool's gold once the planet was surveyed. So... is there any surveys (chemical or radiation) to prove there is Helium-3?

Because China can do it !
Comrade cestmoi ,
Thank you for the interesting info on the Helium 3 story . It is good that China is prepared to invest money , man power and scientific capital into this moon-probe. It does earn bragging rights ( which will sh!t our baying hounds here no end ) , it has military and communications and command spin offs and simply because " China can do it !! "
You must be on to something worthwhile , best judged each time by the speed and spastic reactions of the pesky pests . The more creditable an item is to China , the faster they congregate and curse . Good work cestmoi . Keep the bastards honest . Zhongguo wan shui .

Testing for Helium-3 deposits

This exploratory mission will test for 14 usable elements. I am arguing that Helium-3 must be one of them. Helium-3 is deposited on the sunny side of the
moon
by the solar wind because the
moon
does not have a magnetosphere. The question is whether we have the technology to harvest that and the return on investment. It is interesting to note that the solar wind will continue depositing He-3 as long as the sun is shining, something like the self-replenishing magic pudding. No need to bicker over it

Thanks for the encouragement, and ignore the pesky pests, they are irrelevant.

Technology to harvest He-3
I don't think we can underestimate the challenge to current technology, bearing in mind the deposits, logically, will be richest on the side constantly exposed to the sun. Now that's a hostile environment and the lunar rover will take a pounding from the solar wind.
We have another two decades to put a fusion-reactor into operation, by that time technology should have come that far to enable China to harvest He-3 from the
moon
.
At the moment, we have been shut-out of the International Space Station (ISS) program, but not for lack of enthusiasm from China. It's a political power play. China must rely on herself, as usual.
