Why AP chooses to report Cho's sister ???
Gunman's sister deals with Iraq aid
By MATTHEW LEE, Associated Press Writer
The sister of the gunman responsible for the deadliest shooting rampage in U.S. history works as a contractor for a State Department office that oversees billions of dollars in American aid for Iraq.
Sun-Kyung Cho is employed by the Iraq Reconstruction Management Office, according to U.S. officials and a State Department staff directory that says she works from an annex near the department's headquarters in Washington.
Messages left on her office voicemail, in which she identifies herself as "Sun Cho," were not immediately returned on Wednesday.
The Virginia Tech gunman was her brother, Cho Seung-Hui. Thirty-three people died in the rampage Monday, including the 23-year-old student, who committed suicide.
Spokesman Sean McCormack declined to discuss Sun Cho's status but told reporters "this person is not a direct-hire employee of the State Department." He declined to comment further, citing privacy concerns. Other U.S. officials confirmed she works for a contractor.
The office was set up by President Bush to coordinate the reconstruction program in Iraq and offers jobs to "highly skilled and motivated United States citizens" to work at the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad, according to State Department documents. The office also has several Washington-based positions.
"Our mission is to support the sovereign, democratic rights of the Iraqi people to govern themselves, defend their country, and rebuild their economy," the office says in its recruiting brochure. "This ongoing mission is one that is unprecedented in size and scope."
Sun Cho's current job is her third stint with the State Department, according to Princeton University, where she graduated with an economics major in 2004.
She previously worked as a summer intern at the department's International Labor Office and held a three-month economics internship in the summer before her senior year at the U.S. Embassy in Bangkok, Thailand, sponsored by Princeton's International Internship Program.
"They were the most amazing three months of my life," Cho told the university's weekly bulletin in Nov. 24, 2003, article about the program, describing her experiences in the Thai capital.
"I found that the best way to get to know the city was taking the skytrain to random locations and walking around for a couple of hours," it quoted her as saying.
"I think it is always easy for Americans to maintain an American way of life abroad. The best thing is to avoid these traps and go out there and immerse yourself in a new culture."
The article described a visit to a border town where she saw deplorable working conditions for Burmese migrant workers.
"She said the experience was so profound that after returning to campus, she changed the focus of her senior thesis to a more labor-related topic," the article said.

me
me think, since Cho's sister is not involved in the "massacre", actually she knew nothing about it.
why the Associated Press, decided to report on the sister? at this special time, her whereabouts and privacy, need to be protected. Any detailed information about her or her family could put them in great danger.

DISGUSTING
It is too much more than bad for AP to report this news story.
Yesterday, I was valuing the scrupulous reports by the major US media, including AP, not echoing Chicago Sun-Time to frame a Chinese.
But today, I change my mind. I no longer value AP at all. It shows no professional ethics, and even no human ethics.
The report is disgusting.

emmm.... I posted a short news about Cho's parents' conditions yesterday reported by S. Korean newspapers. That report revealed his parents' job and his sister's graduation university. But that was all.
I think it's accepable to interview Cho's immediately relatives and friends (if he had any), but to detail their personal information is not suitable, especially for a prestigious news agency like AP. I admit that reports should tell readers what they do not know, but please do not violate others' rights. To report does not mean to hurt innocent people.

i suppose the reason why AP chose the gunman's sister is just to satisfy his American audiences who want to know anything about the gunman . it's just a eyes-catching choice . besides there are no negative image description about the sister from the above reporting . maybe we Chinese are too sensitive about the issue .
by the way , if the shooter were a black guy from Mexico or other American countries , it would cause shock and scare among the mainstream white communities. but since now it is a yellow guy ,especailly from American allies , people in U.S. would probably take it as an accident ,not connect it with its immigration policy or other stuff .

or, really?

If you were the sister, ( I assume that you are already troubled by enormous pressure and sadness), will you like this voice-mail??
Besides, they are not Black People in Mexico & other Latino countries.

I agree, the other family members of the killer should be left alone by the press. They will have their own tragedy to cope with, the loss of their son and brother.

Of course they would. They always try to find out more about these sorts of killers and the family is the starting point.
American news appears to like to "personalise" things, to have a more closeup look at a person (good or bad) and find out more.
I remember working on an Olympics broadcast and where the American networks would do an in-depth profile on an athlete's background (mainly US athletes but also other competitors) our Australian media would more concentrate on their performance history.
It's probably an American cultural thing, nothing sinister about it.
The important thing to remember that this reporting on Cho's family, whether you think it's good bad or indifferent, is exactly the same you'd expect if the person was from any other ethnic background.

What's with the "me think' you often use.
It is, I think. (I don't generally comment on English here but I'll make an exception for a mod)
No black people in Mexico or Latino countries?
Are you sure?
Yes, reporting on the family could unfortunately put them in danger.

The mod also had his punctuations all over the place and it seems he doesn't bother to capitalize letters where they should be.

"Go back to China" ???
Va. Tech shooter a 'textbook killer'
By MATT APUZZO and SHARON COHEN,
Associated Press Writers
BLACKSBURG, Va. ---- In high school, Cho Seung-Hui almost never opened his mouth. When he finally did, his classmates laughed, pointed at him and said: "Go back to China."
As such details of the Virginia Tech shooter's life come out, and experts pore over his sick and twisted writings and his videotaped rant, it is becoming increasingly clear that Cho was almost a textbook case of a school shooter: a painfully awkward, picked-on young man who lashed out with methodical fury at a world he believed was out to get him.
"In virtually every regard, Cho is prototypical of mass killers that I've studied in the past 25 years," said Northeastern University criminal justice professor James Alan Fox, co-author of 16 books on crime. "That doesn't mean, however, that one could have predicted his rampage."
When criminologists and psychologists look at mass murders, Cho fits the themes they see repeatedly: a friendless figure, someone who has been bullied, someone who blames others and is bent on revenge, a careful planner, a male. And someone who sent up warning signs with his strange behavior long in advance.
Among other things, the 23-year-old South Korean immigrant was sent to a psychiatric hospital and pronounced an imminent danger to himself. He was accused of stalking two women and photographing female students in class with his cell phone. And his violence-filled writings were so disturbing he was removed from one class, and professors begged him to get counseling. He rarely looked anyone in the eye and did not even talk to his own roommates.
Cho, who killed 32 people and committed suicide at the Blacksburg campus Monday, cast himself in his video diatribe as a persecuted figure like Jesus Christ. Cho, who came to the U.S. at about age 8 in 1992 and whose parents worked at a dry cleaners in suburban Washington, also ranted against rich "brats" with Mercedes, gold necklaces, cognac and trust funds.
Classmates in Virginia, where Cho grew up, said he was teased and picked on, apparently because of shyness and his strange, mumbly way of speaking.
Once, in English class at Westfield High School in Chantilly, Va., when the teacher had the students read aloud, Cho looked down when it was his turn, said Chris Davids, a Virginia Tech senior and high school classmate. After the teacher threatened him with an F for participation, Cho began reading in a strange, deep voice that sounded "like he had something in his mouth," Davids said.
"The whole class started laughing and pointing and saying, `Go back to China,'" Davids said.
Stephanie Roberts, 22, a classmate of Cho's at Westfield High, said she never witnessed anyone picking on Cho in high school. But she said friends of hers who went to middle school with him told her they recalled him getting bullied there.
"There were just some people who were really mean to him and they would push him down and laugh at him," Roberts said. "He didn't speak English really well and they would really make fun of him." .....

Who's telling the truth?
Children can be so cruel.
But that doesn't excuse nor explain his actions.
Chris Davids claims, "The whole class started laughing and pointing and saying, `Go back to China,'"
In the very next paragraph another classmate Stephanie Roberts said "she never witnessed anyone picking on Cho in high school"
So who are we to believe?
Sure some students are bullies but not all.

anger
quote: "The whole class started laughing and pointing and saying, `Go back to China,'" Davids said.
so, in the minds of the whole class (English class at Westfield High School in Chantilly, Virginia), China is backwards, nasty, and Chinese students are stupid, cannot "read aloud" in class, and ought to be laughed at and bullied.

Remember Chinese man was killed in Chicago
A Chinese young man was mistakenly killed by two white rednecks in Chicago because they thought he was Japanese. These two rednecks were angry at Detroit closing auto factories and jealous of Japan's success in selling autos in the US.
So these two idiots harassed the Chinese man at a local nightclub where the Chinese young man was with his friends, a bachelor party before his wedding the next day.
Racism of whites is stupid before its root is foolishness and ignorance. Look around in this forum, it's pretty easy to identify these tiny bird brains in no time.

You're all such angry people. Ready to yell racist at non chinese while using rasict insults yourself.
There must be a word in Chinese for 'HYPOCRITE'....
"suppose if the shooter were a white male
If the student killer were a white man, will AP, and other american press, choose to reveal the detailed backgrounds of his famiy members?"
YES. It happens all the time. We know EVERYTHING about every mass killer we have ever had. This actually makes sure that people know that he has a regular family and he was just a maladjusted youth.

AAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!!!!
[RUNS AROUND SCREAMING HYSTERICLY]
No wonder I can't make any headway in this forum!
Read tekvicious' statement again and again and again!
Memorize it!
Digest it!
Learn it!
Then read the comments under wowzer's thread in the free talk section to see what you all apparently don't know about Americans -- I am so ashamed of you all!
American schools are mean and tough, the stupid little quips that the stupid American media reports about the poor little killer ain't nothin'!
I could list pages and pages of humiliations far worse than these from my school days.
Don't be so damn sensitive!
Ridiculous!
What is wrong with you guys?
Geez!!!
Americans are mean, so what?
The world is a mean damn place!
Do you expect me to carry-on like a kindergartner because some nut-case tried to cause me great bodily harm by hurling a large ice chunk at me from the upper story of a Guangzhou apartment last week?
Am I supposed to whimper and cry?
Get real, would ya?
Show some damn empathy for Henry Lee!
Stop sensationalizing the racism you want to cast against Americans!
The next time some mean ol' nasty bitch goes out of the way to bash me with her purse, what would you have me do?
Talk about why the Chinese are so damn nasty and mean?
GRRRRRRRR!!!!
Thank God, I am wise and experienced enough to the know the truth about the Chinese people
and the Americans
!
Thank God I am not a sensationalist stirring the racist pot!
I am soooooooooo disappointed in my friends!!!!
Now I wish that killer would've just shot me too, then I would never have to know this great disappointment and sorrow ... how's that? Does that suit your kind of sensitivity and over-reaction?
...
