this rule doesn't apply to all foreign bosses I am afraid
But if he/she is a good boss, he/she will try best to understand you, no matter how poor your English is

Don't worry about your boss, just be natural.
Don't worry about the language barrier, your foreign boss should understand or he'll just be an IDIOT.
If "language" is not your strength, try to keep your speech and words simple. Don't use high-flown words which, if inappropriately used for the occasion, may cause misunderstanding.
Don't be or appear to be "too eager" to know your boss for you may attract jealousy from your colleagues (last thing a good boss would want happen in his department/organisation) or give him the wrong impression that you are bootlicking him. He will look down on you.
Proof yourself in the performance of your work. Be creative and receptive to ideas if they make sense. Bosses like to think they are smart but they also like smart employees.
Be sure of the scope of your work, not so that you would be calculating but so that you will not end up a slave labour in your company. I understand that some bosses like to exploit their staff. It's a bit of a grey area but it is good to know your areas of responsibility and understand the line of authority.
My advice: be natural. Bear in mind the above. If unclear instruction is given to you, approach your boss to ask for clarification.

That's a one good way to patch a cultural difference but I also take a different stance.
Your boss should learn the Chinese culture .... if you are referring to working in China.
If your boss, working in China, cannot adapt to the ways in the China and her people, then I think the company has sent the wrong guy to manage the company.
He/She should be shipped back immediately home to handle domestic chores.
Things should work both ways. The worker (China) understanding the work and expectations of performance and boss (foreigner) should have a flexible mindset and be able to adjust to the culture in the new country and its people.
As a worker myself, I do have expectations of my bosses too. I am not a slave, that is to say.

Proving yourself through your work is the best bet. If you're good at your job, the boss will like you, and you will be able to stay on as your English skills develop.
In the meantime, don't use your poor English as an excuse unless it really and truly is a problem; even so, try to get help from your coworkers before you go to your boss. Bosses don't want to hear excuses. They may allow it once or twice, but that's all.

In The West
In the West, the quickest way for the employee to move up would be to sleep with the boss.
Better yet, sleep with the boss and then sue the boss and the company for millions for sexual harassment. Quick settlement, early retirement.
China does not have the lawyers hungry enough to take those cases.

Agree with sockmonkey.
American bosses are demanding and unreasonable.
The excuse they often give for criticising others - they are from the "advanced" country and you are just a "developing" nation.
I have heard those craps from American bosses, many times.
One more thing, when it comes to axeing staff or retrenchment because the company is making losses (due to their poor financial management), the American bosses are merciless. They are quite well-known for that as compared to British or French companies.

If I were your boss (foreign boss), I would like you, or all of the other people, to be active and to be very good at what you are assigned to do. Both are very important. I don't like those people who are very silent and quiet, and only knows how to do work, nothing else they can do. And also I don't like those people who are very active and talkative in the company but don't know how to do work. The worst is that they can not do both.
By the way, don't let your boss and your colleagues think that you are the person who is bootlicking.

What Tongluren said has a point and it is a practical account or practical accounts.
You haven't worked and so you won't know.
Dont' give excuses and think all bosses are great and your women climbed the ladder through their own hard work and ingenuity, perhaps or unless in the respect we are (or Tong is) talking about.
Cheer up!

Hehehe ... also about time to ask for a pay rise. The active ones will.
But I guess that will be next chapter?
