China's Serious Environment Problem
China's Serious Pollution Problem
Are you going to China? Then I will tell you pollution in China is very serious. The Chinese and government official's environmental protection consciousness is very low. The Chinese industry economy increases quickly; pollution grows more serious more; and the great majority of Chinese are insensitive to the pollution. This is a Chinese, as well as, global disaster in the making. I request you help China.
Car and motorcycle traffic is increasing greatly. The population in China is multitudinous"1300000000".is five times as the population of the US. China is short of cultivated land. in spite of this case,The Chinese government is developing the private car industry greatly, new highway construction will take up large areas of land. Traffic accidents increased greatly. In 2003 200,000 people died in traffic accidents in China.
Building development is in mass confusion. Building technique is primitive and building in consuming large amounts of materials. In 2003 China poured 44% of the world's cement. Building a house will consume more amounts of cement brick and decorative colorful brick in China than The Western Nation. But these houses make little use of insulation letting heat flow out in the winter and letting the heat in during the hot summer months. House repairs are more difficult, too.chinese concerns beauty of own house very much, but chinese don't concern about environment round the house.they spend large money on their own house, but they are stingy in cost of the environment around their house.
Garbage removal is primitive.chinese don't know Garbage classification.waste plastic bags is visible everywhere. The Chinese people like to use plastic bags and batteries just once and then throw them away.china government pay great attention to beauty of city.they afford large money in images structure of city.but they pay little attention to garbage classification.large amounts of garbage is made by large consumption.
River is polluted by chemical fertilizer, pesticide, herbicides, chemical synthetic detergent(washing powders),industry waste water, human excrement and urine, garbage.waste water excrement and urine flow directly into river without any sanitation practices.the most river in china is unsuitable for drinking.many china people is harmed by drinking water in polluted river.
Education in protecting environment is blank. People's understanding and concept of protecting the environment is quite low. China's people are poor, but they are not frugal.Chinese are concerned the beauty of house but don't concerned the beauty of environment,Chinese are concerned about their own health but don't care about environmental health. They like to inject and swallow more medicines, eat more wild animals, but they don't realize that the polluted food, water and air is threatening their health greatly.
China is imitating the West's high pattern of consumerism. Chinese hope per a people owning private car and Motorcycle, living big and big house. Consuming large power source as Western nations do. The Chinese government is making effort to realize this aim. China is producing large cars and motorcycles, large cement and brick.Exploiting large coal mines and oil field, large ore mines. Building large multi-story buildings and huge highway construction patterns. Enlarging blindly more and more area of cities and towns land. Large areas of land are damaged by the exploitation of natural resources.
The population in China is multitudinous, 1.3 billion(perhaps 1.4or1.5 billion)people, five times the population of the US. China is short of cultivated land. The actual situation demands that China doesn't imitate the West's high consumption. China should develop electronic information consumption. Should develop economizing energy industries. If not, the Chinese would ruin their own environment,in further more, affect the global environment.
The Chinese don't realize that pollution is their most dangerous enemy.

yeah...totally understand, urgent efforts should be taken. Frankly, before I went to HK, I was not care about the environment problem, since you know, grow up in a serious polutted evironment, you won't know what is good, but once you experienced what's is fresh, clean and comfortable. then you'll have a strong feeling on it. I am not saying the environment in HK is good, as you know, HK is a small place with huge amount of traffics, and other polutted shit, but there is one thing good, which is you won't feel any dust in HK, since the gas for the car is quite good. In mainland, once go out, then u gotta have a facial clean... Any this is also why HK has so many beautiful gals and handsome guys.

I remember, when I am young, the river in front of my old house is clean and clear.
But now, there's hardly a single fish in it and it stinks.

Yes ,there are serious environmental problems in China. Now not only the commoners but also the government are realise the problems, I can deeply feel the central government are more concerning the environmental problems this year .
But environment protection is not only the government’s responsibilities but also everyone’s duty .
So if we want to live in a good environment and not harm our descendants, please do the cement work in our power .

I know the power plants in South China are applying Flue Gas Desulphurisation (FGD) system to cope with the problem. But it has a long way to go.

Nation sets emission reduction goal by energy-saving tech
By Fu Jing (China Daily)
Updated: 2006-03-29 14:28
China proposes to reduce emissions by millions of tons over the next 20 years in an effort to help reduce global warming through energy-saving technologies.
Minister of Construction Wang Guangtao said yesterday China will lessen its greenhouse emissions by 846 million tons annually if all new buildings were installed with energy-saving technologies. The construction sector takes up nearly 40 per cent of China's total energy consumption.
By 2020, China's per capita living space will be double what it is now, as 30 billion square metres of housing will have been constructed.
"If all of the national energy-saving standards have been fully implemented by 2020, China will be greatly contributing towards curbing global warming," said Wang.
At yesterday's opening ceremony of an international exhibition and forum on green and smart buildings in Beijing, Wang did not link the proposed emission cuts to the international cleaner development mechanism (CDM) projects currently under the framework of the UN's Kyoto Protocol.
Vice-Minister of Construction Qiu Baoxing said the potential emission reduction could bring "many business opportunities" for domestic real estate developers, who are allowed to trade the reduced emission quota to developed countries.
Under CDM, developed countries can carry out emission-reduction projects in developing countries through financial and technical co-operation, and this would count towards their emission targets.
Wang said China has already set "year-to-year targets" in its national energy-saving campaign in real estate development.
By 2010, all new buildings should be 50 per cent more energy efficient than 2005 and 65 per cent more efficient by 2020.
The government plans to save 20 per cent of energy by 2010 on the basis of 2005 consumption.
Vice-Premier Zeng Peiyan yesterday said the campaign was crucial because the country continued to face shortages of resources. "If we don't take action now the situation will become worse," said Zeng.
To make the buildings more energy efficient, Qiu said environmental impact evaluations would be carried out during construction and when choosing what materials and machinery to install.
The exhibition included innovative ideas such as using solar cookers in kitchens, setting-up smart wind power generators above buildings and letting intelligent systems control heating or cooling.
Statistics show only 15 per cent of China's new buildings since 2000 can be called environmentally friendly, and this may be due to the extra cost associated with more environmentally friendly buildings.
"The extra cost is the major reason why the market is slow to react to the campaign," said Zhang Jun, a Beijing-based real estate developer.
To encourage the promotion of energy-saving buildings, Zhang said the government should put in place an economic incentive mechanism, for example, preferential tax reductions on such buildings.

Auditors: Billions for water projects go down the drain
(China Daily)
Updated: 2006-03-30 06:33
Billions of yuan meant for water conservation projects have been mismanaged or misused, according to a national audit report released yesterday.
The findings were based on a 2004 audit of 71.6 billion yuan (US$8.9 billion) in funds allocated for such projects during 2002 and 2003, or 77 per cent of the total amount, according to the National Audit Office.
Among the key findings:
More than 3.5 billion yuan (US$437.5 million) was retained for no sound reason and nearly 1.4 billion yuan (US$175 million) was used improperly.
Nearly 1 billion yuan (US$125 million) was spent on building hotels or given out as subsidies and bonuses to staff members in some projects.
Other government departments involved in the misuse of public funds returned 4.16 billion yuan (US$520 million) to the State coffers.
The departments also turned over 1.18 billion yuan (US$147 million) to the central budget and reallocated 11.76 billion yuan (US$1.47 billion).
The audit also unearthed 114 cases of suspected malpractice in the use of funds, leading to court sentences for 76 officials and administrative punishment for 213.
Ten of the 12 departments accused of falsifying their budgets have transferred 390 million yuan (US$48.75 million) in inflated expense claims to next year's budget.
On the brighter side, the audit office found satisfactory results with environmental protection along the Qinghai-Tibet railway.
To reduce the negative impact of the construction, 33 passageways all completed by June 2005 were built for wild animals to cross the railway.
According to the Institute of Zoology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the number of antelope using the passageways rose to more than 1,500 last year from 400 in 2003. The animals go to Hoh Xil, a traditional mating place.
The report said the government planned to spend 1.54 billion yuan (US$193 million) for environmental protection along the Qinghai-Tibet railway accounting for 4.6 per cent of the total investment on the project of which 1.45 billion yuan (US$181 million) had been spent by June 2005.
Construction of the 1,142-kilometre Qinghai-Tibet railway from Golmud to Lhasa, scheduled to be operational this summer, started in June 2001.

I won't say it has achieved an early 'victory'.
Just erase some disgrace won't gain 'victory'

Firms hand in proposals to tackle pollution
By Sun Xiaohua (China Daily)
Updated: 2006-03-30 06:37
China's fight against water pollution has achieved an early victory, with 21 factories found to be polluting handing in proposals on how they plan to clean up their operations.
The State Environmental Protection Administration (SEPA), the country's top environmental watchdog, said in February that 11 factories found to be polluting heavily were told to cleanup their act or close their operations. Another 10 factories were listed by the SEPA as not passing the environmental impact assessment (EIA).
"The campaign aims at stopping potential sources of water pollution," said Pan Yue, vice-minister of SEPA.
"SEPA will take strict measures to supervise the blacklisted factories. Those which do not work out well will be punished according to the newly-issued draft regulations on environmental polluters."
The 11 polluters have submitted their cleanup plans to SEPA costing a total of 400 million yuan (US$49 million).
The 10 factories that failed the EIA have stopped their operations after SEPA's warning.
They have updated their facilities at a cost of 150 million yuan (US$18.5 million).
Since the Songhua River chemical spill last November in Northeast China, 73 water pollution accidents have occurred across the country, Pan said, adding that the task of environmental protection was pressing.
At a State Council meeting hosted by Premier ^^ yesterday, a five-year plan on pollution control and prevention for Songhua waters was passed, together with the regulations of compensation and relocation of the large-and-medium hydro power station constructions.
The pollution control and prevention on Songhua waters has been written into the country's 11th Five-Year Plan (2006-10).

Yes, that's a serious problem and need to be settled immediately.
As far as I know , actions are being taken , efforts being made.
I learnt yesterday China Daily held a conference about industrial pollution and
sustainable development.
Numbers of senior economic experts attend it .
Personally , that's a good start , I think.

China Trans-century Green Project Plan
For those who are interested in knowing the environmental protection in administration level in China, you can browse the website
http://www.zhb.gov.cn/english/ch ... anel=2&column=3
Actually the first stage of China Trans-century Green Project Plan started from 1996 . The plan covers 15 years, divided into three stages. The first stage synchronizes with the Ninth Five-Year Plan period from 1996 to 2000...
I am not a watchdog on envirnomental issues. Just know there're some improvement over the years. Like using environmental-friendly fuel on bus and taxi, building wind power plants and nuclear power plants for alternatives....etc but certainly not a victory. It's a long way to go.
