Japan opens door wider to tourists (20090702-01)

Japan hopes the opening of its borders to individual tourists from China will boost its economy, said Japan Tourism Agency (JTA) commissioner Yoshiaki Hompo.

The nation began issuing tourist visas to Chinese individuals yesterday, allowing them to visit Japan for the first time without tour guides.

"Japan and China are the world's second and third largest economies. The meaning of issuing tourist visas to Chinese is far more profound than any other similar issuance," Hompo said.

Plug not pulled on software (20090702-02)

Despite a last-minute delay in implementing Green Dam internet-filtering software, China's authorities and its PC manufacturers said yesterday they expect the tool will end up on new computers.

One day after the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) declared a postponement to the July 1 start date for the mandatory inclusion of "Green Dam-Youth Escort" porn filtering software, an MIIT official said it was only "a matter of time" before the directive took effect.

Tens of thousands of people from Hong Kong offered happy birthday greetings yesterday. Revelers joined a parade of dragon dancers and a marching symphony orchestra as the city marked the 12th anniversary of its return to the motherland.

The parade kicked off after the Chinese national flag and the flag of the special administrative region (SAR) were raised at a morning ceremony. The ceremony was attended by government officials and hundreds of local residents and tourists at Golden Bauhinia Square in Wan Chai.

Weighty matter: Teen's struggle is a trend (20090702-04)

For the past decade, Huang Qing has seen her girth expand at a startling rate.

"My waistline has already grown past the tape measure," said the 17-year-old in Shanghai. Her weight has rocketed from 140 kg to 210 kg in the past four years, four to five times the weight of most her age.

Wearing a loose, red T-shirt and black sweatpants that take "three times" the usual amount of cloth to be tailor-made, Huang has to drag her legs very slowly to move about in her home.

"To be frank, I even find it difficult to get up from the bed," she said.
