China Daily Audio News (April 1)

DPRK to try US journalists as launch nears (20090401-01)

The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) said yesterday it would put on trial two US journalists arrested last month on its border with China.
It accused the two women reporters, Laura Ling and Euna Lee from the US-based media outlet Current TV, of unspecified "hostile acts".
Pyongyang's announcement comes just days before it plans to put a satellite into space. Washington and others say it will be a test of a long-range missile.

Burying loved ones deadly expensive (20090401-02)

Think purchasing a house in Guangzhou is expensive? Try buying a place to bury your loved ones.
An average grave in this southern city costs 30,000 yuan ($4,390), and a better one may be double that, yesterday's Nanfang Daily reported.
That makes a grave, meter for meter, more expensive than a house.
"Guangzhou has only nine graveyards and graves are in short supply," said Li Guoqing, director of the Guangzhou Funeral and Interment Service Center. "The surging demand is pushing prices so high."

China to be first to 'escape crisis'  (20090401-03)

LONDON: China's economy will be the first to recover from the global recession, predicted a top international business leader yesterday.

In an interview with China Daily, Martin Sorrell, CEO of WPP Group, tipped emerging nations to escape the financial gloom earlier than developed economies, but he warned the process will still be a slow one.

China began to feel the force of the crisis following the Beijing Olympics last summer, with factory closures across the country causing mass unemployment among migrant workers.

Shopping team headed for US   (20090401-04)

The Ministry of Commerce is sending a delegation to the United States this month to explore trade and investment opportunities - close on the heels of a similar mission to Europe - according to sources.

The team will visit Washington, Chicago and San Francisco on a 10-day trip later in the month.

Gao Yaling, a press officer at the ministry, yesterday confirmed the trip to China Daily, but would not elaborate.
