Toy factory dispute settled (20081127-01)

A leading toy producer in South China's Guangdong province has agreed to renew its labor contracts with some senior employees following a violent protest by employees on Tuesday, an official said yesterday.
The board of directors of the Hong Kong-funded Kaida toy factory in the Zhongtang township in Dongguan city has also agreed to, in accordance with the law, offer a new plan about giving economic compensation and bonuses to the employees whose contracts were terminated, said Li Zhihui, head of the township.

Massive rates cut a surprise to all (20081127-02)

The central bank yesterday cut the benchmark interest rate by 1.08 percentage points, the highest in 11 years, to stimulate the economy battered by the global financial and other economic woes.
It also cut the proportion of money six big commercial banks have to hold as reserves by 1 percentage point to 16 percent. The cut in reserve requirement, which comes into effect from December 5, for the smaller banks is 2 percentage points to 14 percent.

Psychological abuse 'on rise' (20081127-03)

Domestic abuse is on the increase in China, and its form is becoming increasingly psychological rather than physical, a women's counselor said yesterday.
Hou Zhiming, director of the Maple Women's Psychological Counseling Center, a nonprofit organization based in Beijing, told China Daily that "cold violence" is a growing problem among spouses and cohabiting partners.

$260b stimulus package proposed for EU (20081127-04)

The European Commission (EC) yesterday called for a European Union-wide fiscal stimulus package of 200 billion euros ($259 billion) to stave off looming recession in the 27-nation bloc.
The proposal comes just a day after the US unveiled two new plans that will provide $800 billion to try to help unfreeze the market for consumer debt, from home mortgages to credit cards.
