感觉翻译里最难的一件事就是这个。根据中文意思，在字典上查到的词，或自己知道的词，不知道是否能用到某个场合。就像 watch TV 还是 see TV，这我们知道了，还好办。但语言的组合无穷无尽，哪个词该用到哪，怎么记得过来啊？不知道诸位大仙有何好的办法？

You need a better dictionary, Cop!

To find a suitable word (especially verb from the dictionary is not enough. You need to make sure the word is used at the right place in the right form. And this, very often, you can easily solve with the help of a good learners' dictionary.

The word "scatter" may not be a bad choice. But it was wrong to say a region scattering many rivers and lakes. It could have been good if you had said: scattered with rivers and lakes. You could check it out yourself in the dictionary.

Recommended: Oxford Advanced learner's Dictionary, Longman Contemporary Dictionary, Cambridge Advanced Learner's Dictionary. In fact, any of such dictionaries will give you way more than just the meaning of a verb. Also, don't ever be content with a Chinese translation if you are using a SHUANGJIE, which should be strongly discouraged. Always go to the rich illustrations for the right collocations and forms of the verbs you have in mind.

Try it, and you'll enjoy the use of those dictionaries.

Not sure if even "scattered with" quite conveys 密集; maybe something like "with a dense network of rivers and lakes".

Thanks. You're absolutely right, Nano. I was just commenting on the grammaticality of the tructure rather than the accuracy of translation. Sorry for being misleading.

"Dense" is good for 密集. Hence, another option with that "-ed with" structure could be "an area densely covered with lakes and rivers".

I don't think packed with can be used to replace "a dense network of"... . As for dictionary recommendation, the best learner's dictionary is Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English (fourth edition) with CD-ROM edition. I installed the CD-ROM edition into my computer and have been using it whenever I want to refer to. I have benefited a lot from using the Longman Dictionary.

For a straightforward sentence like this, which can be translated in different ways, it shouldn't be necessary to consult a dictionary. As to the use of words such as abundant (#2), most (#3), scattering (#4), densely covered with (#10), packed with (#12), I doubt that a dictionary can tell you definitively which ones among them are appropriate or inappropriate for this purpose.

原文似有点模糊。北京的河流和湖泊也不算太多，只能说相对多。原文的意思是不是说：与华北平原其他地方相比，北京的河流和湖泊比较密集？这个“比较”不能少。

这就牵涉到翻译时常常遇到的一个很头疼的问题：如果原文明显地与事实或常识不符，译者应该怎么办？

译者应该对原文负责，对读者负责，对事实负责

我主张译者有必要时应该对原文加以编辑，当然这样做一来是增加了工作量，二来还得与原文作者（提供者）交涉（有的很高兴接受，有的以为你在找他麻烦）。

要是翻译公司，恐怕就不管这么多，照原文译就是。

完全同意。最理想的是跟作者一起合作，对原文有任何疑问都可以商量。但在实际工作中往往不是这样。
