Small things here and there

Wow, wow, wow, everyone in the party mood!

I am not supposed to log on to the internet as I've promised my friends, "No internet while on vacation". You see, I am on vacation, not even half way through yet, and still have two weeks to enjoy, and in the middle of nowhere.

Somehow, I miss this community after the noisy parties and a few drinks. Yeah, I drink for the moment of excitement and celebration. As we are saying bye bye  to  2007 and unfolding our arms to embrace the new year, 2008, we are excited about the challenges and opportunities lying ahead of us.

May I say a few words?

First of all, thank to China Daily for providing a home for us.

Thank you for posting questions and answers.

Especially, thank you for spending your precious time on reading and replying my posts.

I've found out that my posts for the last year are scattered around, some of them may be worth being revisited, so I said to myself, "Why not put the best of them together?" I would like to open a thread for them, like punching my school assignments with three holes and putting them into a binder.

Those are not self-help manuals, formulas for success, pieces of advice ...

Those are small things, simple things, things here and there, reflecting the ways I look at things ...

Happy New Year!

Sharing ...

As I am taking a backward glance at my childhood and my adolescence, those happy moments are flowing through my mind, like a movie, my mom and dad were teaching my brother and me to swim, watching the colorful sunset together  from the lookout, reading the bedtime stories for us …

One particular scene is coming up to my mind at this moment, and lingering, it was an autumn night, one of the beautiful nights in four seasons,  stars were twinkling in the dark blue sky, and tree leaves were shimmering under the silvery, full moon as they were swaying slowly with the cool breeze. My brother and I went to bed reluctantly at 9:30, after playing.

Suddenly, I was hearing a gentle voice in my dream, getting louder and louder, and my dream was broken and gone after  my brother and I were woken up by my mom,

"what's going on?" I asked in  my sleepy voice as I was rubbing my eyes, and looking at the clock, it was close to the midnight.

"Come, come to the window." She whispered.

As we were gazing into the starry sky, a shining object flying across the heaven far, far away, leaving a bright, slightly curved, long path, as its tail was blurring and fading away. "Wow, awesome!" We were astonished and excited, it took us a long time to fall back into sleep.

When I was a boy, I didn’t think too much about why my mom woke us up along with other things my parents did for us, although some seemed a bit uncommon, I have taken things for granted. As I’ve grown up, replaying those scenes, I always come to the same conclusion.

My parents have taken us with them to embark on the adventures together, to open  the windows for us to see the wonderful world, to share wonder and excitement with us … They have been passing  their enthusiasm, optimism, wisdoms and many small things on to us, things money can’t buy.

I joined a global consulting firm after graduated in China seven years ago, and my work projects have taken me to many places and countries around the globe… and those moments are always with me.

a writing lesson ...

I would like to share a writing lesson I learned from our American teacher when I was a college student a few years ago.

In our first writing class, she brought a red apple, put it on a transparent glass plate,  placed the plate on the desk near the window, and adjusted it a few times. The sunlight was streaming on the red apple and its holder, and casting a narrow shadow on the desk, a glimmer of smile was on her face. As she was walking away from the plate slowly, and looking around us, she started to talk, I couldn't remember the exact words she said, what she told us roughly as follows.

'I would like you to describe the red apple and its surrounding in about one hundred words,  which must be strict to the sketches of its physical appearance. After that, you are going to add another one hundred words to stretch its look to other areas that are related to it, for example,  giving a brief description of an apple tree, an apple orchard, its sweetness and nutrition, etc. "

We were stunned,  biting our pens,  or gazing at the apple, or peeping at each other, as our teacher was pacing up and down the class room, saying a few encouraging words now and then, giving out a few hints here and there. However, it didn't help, a large portion of our papers remained empty, we were only hear the clock ticking faster and faster, and ticking louder and louder, the time was running out ...

The underlined theme she taught us is that to learn a language, especially a foreign language, we must get back to the basic, the square one, and start from the scratch, like children, who usually describe things and their surroundings specifically and vividly and concretely, as apposite to them, we adult tend to think abstractly and generally, and use many big words (abstract and general) which is the number one enemy of the language learning.

For example, most of us know words like fruit, vegetable, light,  we may not understand, cranberry, kale, dusk (or twilight) ... on the contrary, children usually pick up these specific words before they learn the categorical term, like fruit ...

Just like most of you, I am still working on the crazy English. Is it crazy? No, as our teacher said, "It is lovely, the school catalog calls it as an English course, I would call it as a course of magic, the magic of words and ideas."

Enthusiasm, the in-dwelling God

Your topic is so tempting that I wish I could have written a long essay if my time had permitted, especially, it was posted by  someone who is a Greek, am I mistaken, xilaren?

If my homework was not misleading me, Enthusiasm is a very remarkable word. The ancient Greeks used it to describe an inspired person, as "en" means in, and "theos" means God. The enthusiastic person, they thought, was the one who held the presence of an in-dwelling God. And the more you ponder this, the more you are convinced that the Greeks not only had a word for it, but the right one.

Enthusiasm, no other single human characteristic, maybe with the exception of kindness, will bring so much to happy and successfully living. Everyone is born with it. Especially, children have it.

What is the meaning of "enthusiastic"? I think that It can be defined as someone is able to react with eagerness, The enthusiastic person has the capacity for generating excitement about ideas, people, events, etc. He responds things surrounding him not only with his five senses, his brain, but also with his emotion. He feels things and cares things. In a word, he has a great capacity for surprise!!!

Enthusiasm has the power to lift people over the rough places in life. Of course, the certain aspects of living are the enemy of Enthusiasm. Routine deadens it, familiarity  dulls it. I had learned a few tricks, supposing this were the only time, the first time, supposing this sunset, this soccer game, this party, etc. supposing you would never be experiencing these things again... ...
... ...

Enthusiasm, the greatest gift in the world!  But to keep it, you have to give it away!

The sentences were inspired and stolen  from the lines in Romeo and Juliet

Juliet:
"But to be frank, and give it thee again,
And yet I wish but for the thing I have.
My bounty is as boundless as the sea,
My love as deep; the more I give to thee,
The more I have, for both are infinite"

Listening to audio books ...

I am thinking about skipping the introduction and going straight to post the audio books I am fond of. Partly I can’t wait. Partly I am not good at giving an introduction. On second thought, it might be helpful to share a thing or two of my own experiences with you below.

Like many Chinese students studying in China (not abroad), I really had hard times to put my ideas into English words and to get them across to others, and felt hopelessly that English was far and away, beyond my grasp. My frustration and disappointment had been written all over my face and spotted by someone at the English Gathering on our campus, and he said, "Why don't you go to the library to pick up an audio book? It may help." and I did. Those casual words turned out to be one of many pieces of the best advice I have ever had. The great performers brought the characters and scenes from the books to life vividly. As time has gone by, their voices have taken me to wonderlands, fairylands and neverlands while I was walking in the woods, doing workout at the gym, driving to work, etc. A few names sprang to mind,

Great Expectations read by Martin Jarvis,
Jane Eyre read by Juliet Stevenson,
Atonement read by Carole Boyd,
When We Were Orphans read by John Lee.

While astronaut Armstrong was stepping on the surface of the moon, he said: "That's a small step for man, a giant leap for mankind."  Looking back the moment I was stretching out my hands to grab my first audio book from the shelf, as if it happened yesterday not years ago,  a kind of wonderful sensation is sweeping through me and I'm hearing my own voices, resonating and lingering: "That's a small step for me, a giant leap for my English."

"Why don't you give it a try?"  Indeed, why not?

good experiences for us.

tks Changzhou for your excellent description in learning English and your sharing of your life.

Actually to say, there are some skills in developing our English, but sometimes we don't mass these simple methods. When we browse the methods supplied by others,we'll find that it is not too difficult for us to do.

I usually practice my English by writing articles, but it's a pity that i can not persist in doing this.I'm disturbed by other things or I myself give up to do this.A lazy person.

Go on pls, enjoy your beutiful words.

flyflag, thank you for reading my posts and I am glad you like it. I always think that learning a foreign language is not like studying the rocket science. All of us can do it as long as we keep our motivation alive and make an effort, above all finding the ways to build up your interest in English novels may help.

Lantern festival

Once upon a time ...

Lantern festival shares the same sentiment of valentine's day. The first time I heard the story was from my great grandma.

Imagining hundred and thousand years ago, big city and bright light, hustling and bustling, had not come to disturb our Chinese everyday lives. girls lived in their house surrounded by the dark green brick wall, making chit-chat in their own chambers, wandering in the oriental gardens, looking at their pretty faces in the tranquil ponds ... They were forbidden to go out alone.

They were longing for the lantern night. This was the only night of the year they were free. After the night fell, the sea of lanterns were shimmering and glistening, girls would sneak away from the crowd to meet their young men, murmuring and whispering, exchanging love tokens, making vow, promising to meet again at the same place and at the same time next year, saying good bye again and again with their tear swelling, parting was a sweet sorrow...

susan_wang, hmmm, the rational part of me would agree with your view, the irrational part of me would be heading in the opposite direction. You see ...

Yesterday they were thirsty for the sweet and crystal spring water of freedom; today we are drown in the deep blue sea of freedom.

Yesterday they were locked in the forbidden gardens, but their hearts were wide-open; today we are set free, but our hearts are tightly and utterly shut.

Yesterday their longing and yearning gave the  meaning of true romance; today our wanting and hunting are abusing the meaning of true love.

So we are cowardly running away from true love and simply saying, "let us do it." or speaking abstractly and formally like a lawyer or a business man, "let us make our relationship work."

Maybe, the wisdom of an old saying sheds some light on it.

"Easy come and easy go!"

Hi, changzhou - Haven't seen you here fore a long time. So the moment I saw your name, I came here. Really what you wrote, especially the writting lesson and the audio books, is like the light at the end of the tunnel which lightens my road of learning English. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Hope you'll offer us more to read.

You might need to hold on to your current job as you are hunting for the new one, I would rather look at the job interview skill as one of the critical skills in one's career, which need to be improved constantly, especially in today's competitive and dynamic job markets.

First of all, I would suggest changing the mindset of job interview and looking at it as a negotiation process and your questions are as important and impressive as your answers.

How can you get hired? Apart from your education and background, one of critical perspectives shifted is to look at the job interview as a negotiation process in which both parties have the same power to bargain and strike a win-win deal. If you look like a beggar for a job in the interview, you will lose the battle before it starts.  Regarding to the details of how-to? there are thousands of books available online. One thing I like to single out is that your answers and questions should get to the points and more specific and descriptive, because

- The general questions usually lead to ambiguous replies, and only can be used as a leading question, and must be followed by more specific questions.

- The general remarks give others the impressions that you don't care too much about it, or you are not interested it, or you are stupid.

... It could trigger another issue. One of my friend from HR department told me that most of the company DO NOT like this kind of people, I mean the person who holding the current job and hunting for another one...

... I was turned down so many times due to the unsuccessful interviews. The point is my answer is not they want. I wonder that may be I could not get the hint of their question...
As lifetime employment is receding and disappearing, you might be pondering what loyalty means to you and your employer. I could see that you are smart enough to figure it out. Why would some people like to move on? The answers are varied from one person to other, which are beyond the scope of our discussion, and so are other issues you brought up, for the sake of keeping our focus on "the job interview skills".

You said, "I was turned down so many times due to the unsuccessful interviews.  The point is my answer is not they want." Have you spent enough time to go over your answers and questions again to see what you have done right and what you have gone wrong after each interview? After reviewing and replaying the scenes of previous interviews, have you come up with the better answers for "the imaginary interviews" being given to you next time? "next time" is a positive thinking and lifting you through the rough places, and its counterpart is "if only", you would sigh and groan that I would have got the job if only my answers were correct. This sort of negative thinking will only drag you down.

I could imagine how you felt after you received those "turn-down" messages. How soon would you be able to bounce back from the disappointment and frustration, and get back to normal? Rather than having the bad feelings toward your potential employers, you should focus on the bright side and opportunities in those difficulties, and immediately take actions by asking them with your sincere, professional and controlling voices (phone calls, emails and letters) about what they would frankly think of your performance in the interview and what their expectation of the ideal candidates would be, and so on, after saying "many thanks to them for giving you an interview". Besides, your positive attitude and courage would engrave the good impressions in their minds. Perhaps when an opening comes up in the future, they will ring you up.

Have you given your serious thoughts about the meaning of "the negotiation process"? Why did I point out that "asking questions" in the interview is as important and impressive as giving the answers?  How important do the communication skills in general play a part in job interview?

about job interview #3, your career goals

Your career goal is a long term goal. You must aim high and be grounded as well. Arming with this mindset, you might come up with a paragraph, for example, if your long term career goal is to become a senior manager or executive, you might say something as follows.

I would like to picture myself to become a senior manager in five years. As a manager, I will be in charge of the whole operation, taking up more responsibilities, making the key decisions, adding more value to the company and its shareholders ...

You know, at the same time, I am constantly  reminding myself of that, to achieve  my goal, I must be grounded, moving forward one step at a time, keeping myself open-minded, respecting my teammates, and learning from them ...

The thing is, I will put the company and our common goals above my own goal. I will be glad and feeling good as long as I am able to help our company to grow.

A note, the last paragraph  is a must, because it will give your prospective employer an impression that you are not a selfish person or a self-centered person, and you always put the interest of your employer at the first place.

You may have another career goal,  putting your thoughts into words (in both English and Chinese) may help, and rewrite a few times until you are satisfied, just keep trying and trying.

a footnote, from my post in English Square»what are your career goals? Or what are your future plans? (upstream)

it can't be denied that puppy love attached to each of us when we were bud in the soft sunlight.surprisingly,it would narrowly escaped our grasp .puppy love grant not only treakle and honey but also delight and delectation.puppy love is an auduous journey when you are hurted ,but beneath that frustration or hardship is ,however,i firmly believe, a indelible period in our life ... ...
Puppy love, romance, dream, illusion, despair, and so forth, you name it. This is a big part of the life journey, the best part of it.

Having left the campus seven years ago, I'm now taking a backward glance at my campus life, the best part of my youth. How unique and quintessential it was! How quickly, how irrecoverably, lost!

My campus life was a mixture of the zest, the generous affection, the illusions and the despair, like the ripe wine, the overflowing fountain, the heavenly palace, etc.

When you are at 18, you are chasing the movie stars, obsessing to a song and listening to it again and again up to thousand times; you are adoring him, worshiping her, envying him/her ... The older generation may say disapprovingly, "that is a typical adolescent love, not real."

What are the real things? When you are dreaming, your dream becomes reality, and you are waking up, the reality becomes your dream.

When you are at 20, you are not afraid to give yourself away, you offer warmth and vitality and sympathy without thinking. Later on, you begin to weigh what you give.

For me, that was the kind of the youthful friendship I cherish most...

"We few, we happy few, we band of brothers", We got drunk together, flying high in the sky, diving deep at the bottom of the sea, wandering freely and aimlessly on the streets.

I knew that I had many admirers when I was at a top university in China, playing football, delivering speechs, grasping my fields/subjects effortlessly ... somehow, I let those "love" opportunities slip away under my fingers, perhaps, as a guy, I cared for many other things, perhaps ... ...

Any solution? There is no solution! That is your life journey, a smooth and calm one is a dull one and the comfortable one is a tedious one. Everyone has a unique journey. Here is one of many tips

Before you are falling in love with someone else, you should fall in love with your own life, and it will love you right back!

about job interview #4, make yourself comfortable

so anybody can give me some advise about the interview?
As hundreds and thousands of books about interviews are available in the bookstores and online, and your question is too general, I am not sure what is the best way to give you a tip or two. I would try, anyway.

First of all, you must make yourself comfortable and relaxed so that you will make others comfortable as well. It is very crucial to know that you are the message, I meant, not only your spoken language is the message, but also your body language, your facial expression, your eye contact, etc. In a word, you must show yourself that you are a person with confidence,  can-do-attitudes ...

The next one would be a new way to look at the interview. Interview is nothing but a negotiation process, in which you and your prospective employer have an equal power. The purpose of the negotiation is to reach a win-win deal that are satisfied by both parties. For example, one your side, you would land an interesting, challenging job with higher salary and better career prospect; one their side, they would bring someone on board, who not only can get job done, also is willing to go the extra mile, do the extra work, and com up with the fresh, out-of-box ideas, who can add the greater value to the company.

During the interview, and to be precise, as you are sitting at the bargaining table and facing the interviewers, you must not be afraid of asking questions, good questions about the company, job responsibility, career advancement, etc. Asking questions are as important as answering ones, even more critical, I believe.

Besides, as you are developing the interview skills in particular and the communication skills in general in the future, learning how to ask good questions must be taken into account. In the eyes of many westerners, most of the Chinese candidates are too quiet, too timid, too reserved ...

Just dropping a few lines and hope it helps.

Here is one of the replies

Hello changzhou, you did good job which make us read your posts conveniently. Thanks for your sharing.

Regarding the ideas of job interview, i like what you said---a negotiate process. All of your opinions  is very       helpful for the friends who will take the interviews.

I also miss my campus life very much, just as you said which mix many emotions and things. Now take backward the campus life,it's still a good memory. how time flies! flies just as i graduated yersterday.

Although you let your those"love" opportunities slip away under your fingers because of many other things, believe what you got is far more than it. Life is journey, everyone have different journey.Maybe someone pay more attention on landscapes in the process of journey.
