As If!(e-c)practice

As If!

It all started when my friend Tom asked me to meet him in front of Geraldton library at midnight. I went, of course, out of curiosity, and found him crouched next to the steps holding a large, old-fashioned pocket watch. He waved at me to sit down.

'Matt, you're never gonna believe this. I've found a way to travel back in time!'
This statement was greeted with silence from me. He frowned. 'It's true, you know.'
I snorted. 'Yeah, right. As if.'
He looked angry. 'Okay, I'll SHOW you!'
He flicked open the pocket watch. I shivered. I could feel something happeni...
There was a flash of silver light and I was jerked backwards, roaring winds whipping around me. Then I landed, slamming into the ground. Sunlight peeped in through my half-closed eyes, blinding me. There was a thump nearby, and then someone grabbed my arm and hauled me to my feet.

Tom's freckly face was split in two by his massive grin. 'See, I told you!' he crowed, doing a little victory dance.
I looked at him sourly, saying, 'Where exactly are we?'
'We're in Palos, in Spain, and it's ten o'clock on the third of August, 1492!'
Surprise wiped away my sourness. '1492? But that's the year...'
'That Christopher Columbus departed for America!'
'Are we gonna see that?' I gasped.
'Not if we hang around here, we're not!'
We reached the wharf gasping for breath. A huge crowd had gathered to see Columbus off on his journey. Tom yanked on my arm. 'Come on, let's get closer!'
We pushed through the crowd, muttering occasional 'scuses' and 'pardons'. I bumped into a hefty looking man, who turned around and growled at me in Spanish. I gabbled a hasty apology and tried to move on, and found that he had hold of my collar. He grunted something in Spanish that I didn't understand, but I got the general drift. You knock the man, you pay.

People were starting to look now, turning away from Columbus and staring at this mountain man and me. All of a sudden Tom appeared out of the crowd. He gabbled something hurriedly in Spanish. The hulk that had me seemed to consider this. He scratched his bristly head, and let me go. I let out a sigh of relief and looked at Tom. 'Thanks, mate.'

But Tom wasn't looking at me. His face was like off milk. I spun around in time to see a hairy fist heading my way and, in the half-a-second it would have taken to reach me, I leapt to one side.

WHAM!
啪!
Hulk-man's fist slammed into the man who had been behind me, knocking him flat. The man's neighbour turned and looked at him angrily, spouting Spanish that didn't sound friendly. Hulk-man spat something back, and the man punched him, his fist connecting with the hulk's nose. There was a nasty crunching noise. Blood poured from hulk-man's nose, and he stared around in absolute fury. Then he said something. One word. And then the fight roared into action, everyone punching and kicking and biting. Above everyone I saw Columbus trying to calm them down, shouting in Spanish. Then Tom grabbed my arm said 'Time to go!' and we were gone in a flash of light and a rush of wind that no-one seemed to notice.

We landed back where we had left, on the library lawn. Only it wasn't a lawn anymore. Blackboys sprouted out of the thick undergrowth of ferns and jungly-looking plants. Gum trees stood tall around us. The library itself had vanished, as had my bike.

'What happened here?' I whispered.
'We changed history,' said Tom hollowly 'and so we've changed the present.'
'But where are we?' I said.
Instead of answering, Tom just pointed. I turned around and gasped. Behind us was an immense city, full of ziggurats and mud/stone huts. I recognised it out of the history classes at school. It was a Mayan city.
Tom shook his head. 'We're in Geraldton. Or rather, what would've been Geraldton, if Columbus had discovered America.'
'But...how?'
Tom looked thoughtful, talking slowly as though he was explaining not just to me, but also to himself. 'Columbus never reached America, because he was hurt in the brawl. So no one else went to America, no one wiped out the Mayans. So the Mayans built ships and expanded, eventually coming here.'
'We'd better take a look,' I said, and he nodded.
The city was huge, and it extended off the coast, with parts built on huge rafts anchored in the bay. As we wandered, we saw many people that we knew; only they were Mayan. One of them, a girl called Cat, came out of the big temple as we approached.

'What do ye seek, gentle travellers?' she asked.
I said, without thinking, 'Hey, Cat!'
She looked puzzled. I said, 'It's us, Tom and Matt, from school, you know?'
She frowned. 'School? I know of no 'school'. Who are ye?'
Any reply of mine was cut off by Tom. 'Sorry miss, my friend is a little dehydrated, he is hallucinating.' Then he grabbed me by the shoulder and steered me away.
'You idiot! What were you doing?!' he hissed.
'I only said hi,' I said, confused.
'She doesn't know us! Or if she does, she only knows the Mayan version of us! Do you understand?'
'I understand that we need to fix this,' I grumbled.
He nodded. 'Good idea. We'll go back, and hang around where we came in before.' He pulled out his watch-thing, and grabbed my arm. 'Ready?'
I nodded.
We had vanished before another second passed.
In the end, we fixed it all up fairly easily. We left Palos and landed to find Cat standing in a nightdress in front of us. She gabbled out 'Guys! I had really weird dream. I was, like, a priestess in a, like, Aztec city!

Tom and I looked at each other. 'Yeah, right,' we said. 'As if!'
