The World Without Us

The last human disappears. 48 hours later, the power dies, the pumps stop, and New York's subway tunnels are flooded. The water starts rising into the streets of Manhattan. A couple of decades later, the streets are falling into the restored rivers.

Buildings collapse, their foundations undermined by the water, and clearings are formed where seeds can take hold. New York City starts developing its own ecosystem.

Alan Weisman is an associate professor of journalism at the University of Arizona, who started wondering what the earth would be like if the human race ceased to exist. The book that came out of his research, The World Without Us, is due out in July.

Alan Weisman

"According to Weisman, large parts of our physical infrastructure would begin to crumble almost immediately. Without street cleaners and road crews, our grand boulevards and superhighways would start to crack and buckle in a matter of months. Over the following decades many houses and office buildings would collapse, but some ordinary items would resist decay for an extraordinarily long time."

Weisman talked to engineers and maintenance people, but to get an idea what the world might have been like before us, and what it might return to without us, he traveled. He walked in an ancient forest on the border between Poland and Belarus. It had the luck to be the hunting preserve of a series of kings and czars, and became a national park after WWII. It's home to the last wild herd of European buffalo, as well as elk and wolves. The trees are 150 feet tall and 10 feet in diameter, a reminder of what forests once were like all over the earth.

The Korean DMZ is about 150 miles long and 2.5 miles wide, and it's become a wildlife preserve for flocks of cranes and species that might otherwise have become extinct. Politics has dictated that humans stay out of the Zone, and that let nature take over.

Weisman thinks that this way of looking at the earth might help us think more usefully about our impact and how we might modify it to avoid ecological catastrophe.

He says "I raise the question, Wouldn’t it be a sad loss if humanity was extirpated from the planet? What about our greatest acts of art and expression? Our most beautiful sculpture? Our finest architecture? Will there be any signs of us at all that would indicate that we were here at one point? This is the second reaction that I always get from people. At first they think, This world would be beautiful without us. But then they think, Wouldn’t it be sad not to have us here? And I don’t think it’s necessary for us to all disappear for the earth to come back to a healthier state.”
