Al-Qaida threatens to attack China

I posted this yesterday afternoon already but it did not show up. This piece of news id from today's China Daily:

A prominent Al-Qaida militant on Wednesday threatened to attack Chinese targets in "reprisal" for the July 5 riots in Urumqi, capital of the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region.

He urged Uygurs in Xinjiang to "make serious preparations" for a "holy war" against the Chinese government and called on fellow Muslims for support.

Abu Yahya al-Libi, in a video posted on an Islamist website yesterday, called for "a true return to their (Uygurs) religion and ... serious preparation for jihad in the path of God the Almighty and to carry weapons ..."

He urged the Muslim world to "support them (the Uygurs) with all they can".

It was not the first time a terrorist group has threatened to attack Chinese targets after the July 5 riots, in which nearly 200 civilians, most of them Han Chinese, were killed.

In mid-July, Al-Qaida's Algerian-based offshoot, Al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), issued a call for "reprisals".

AQIM pledged to target the 50,000 Chinese workers in Algeria as well as Chinese projects and workers across northwest Africa, said the London-based international consultancy Stirling Assynt.

The Chinese embassy in Algeria then issued a statement on its website urging Chinese organizations and citizens in Algeria to be on alert.

Justin Crump, head of terrorism and country risk with Stirling Assynt, told China Daily: "Although AQIM appears to be the first arm of Al-Qaida to officially state they will target Chinese interests, others are likely to follow".

In August, the leader of a group calling itself the Turkistan Islamic Party (TIP) urged Muslims to attack Chinese interests worldwide.

TIP has claimed violent attacks in the past, including the bombing of two public buses in Shanghai in May last year.

Yes indeed. :Q

I sincerely hope that China is well prepared. The first step certainly is to observe certain foreigners who are residing in China and to implement tough visa restrictions.

What does Al Qaida want from us?

It has always been only a matter of time before Al Qaida targets China.

We are a secular state, we do not tolerate religious extremism or fundamentalism and we won't have religion tear apart China. Al Qaida probably wants another fundamentalist Islamic republic.

A big "I told you so". The provincial government  should have been more sensitive to inter-ethnic tensions, should have paid more attention. I blame the former provincial governor for the current fiasco.

I expect these nutters to concentrate on Chinese targets abroad. Some governments in Africa or the ME are not in a position to fight back either because they're to weak or silently approve such actions.

I think measures are already

pretty tight in Mainland.

As fort he overseas Chinese nationals and their economic interests they'll have to be more cautious indeed. It's a bad news for the country indeed.

Once again it proves that religious extremism and fanatism are the worst enemies of ANY society.  The government might have to keep a tighter control on foreigners and their "religious" activities!

Religious fanatics cannot be convinced by a more moderate approach. They neither care for people nor nations but only for their demented religion and a world firmly rooted in the 7th century AD. They're outcasts and have to be dealt with accordingly.

Spot on. I understand that certain "religious activities" are already closely monitored.

The funding.....

A basic measure is to control (or at least try) the funding channels of these groups within Mainland. Basically if you cut the source of the funds, you cut the posssibility of the use of "outside" money to create unstability in the country.

Of course these groups know better and have other ways to fund their cells. Close monitoring on chemical plants in the "hot" areas and positioning TRUSTED managers in key positions to avoid the leak of both information and materials that can then be used to make weapons.

A lot can be done to secure the citizens. In Spain we have, unfortunatelly, years of experience fitting against terrorist group ETA. True and active cooperation between Spain and France (where the terrorist use to hide) has given many positive result and today, although an active and bloody group, they have been hit hard in, especially, their logistics and funding sources.

I am sure, that if China needs it, we Spanish will be happy to help and advise the Chinese to protect and fight the evil....wherever this evil is coming from!

ZhonGuo, jia you!
