China, you owe a ‘thanks’ to Bush

Sino-US mutual dependence on economy weakens the divarications of ideology and politics, as apparently indicated by Bush’s term. Nevertheless, the most important economic connection is threatened by worldwide crisis.

Sino-US relations in Obama’s term would be in uncertainty, as some potential trade contradictions come to surface. Once the trade honeymoon is over, political strain will be tough. Beijing may feel yearning for the days of Bush, because his China policy is relatively harmless.

The New Year is the 30th anniversary of China-US diplomatic relations, when Bush is waving goodbye to white house. From the perspective of China, Bush did China many favors. Two countries began strategic economic dialogue in 2006; During Beijing Olympic Games, Bush gave China main support despite other leaders’ hesitation; though white house always keeps an eye on China’s actions in Africa, they just keep silence.

Although China’s military power is too far behind US to be a threat for it, China’s military ambition is apparent. Bush’s white house always alertly watches China, sends polite messages and appeals for transparency. As to Taiwan issue, Bush administration stands by Ma Ying-jeou instead of Chen Shui-bian.

In one word, China should say ‘thank you’ to Bush for many things in his terms. Even Bush’s biggest mistake—Iraq war is good for Beijing to some extent. The war distracted US power and decreased US prestige, while China was rising.

I thought your post was well-stated until you say to thank Bush for distracting US power and for decreasing US prestige. Somone else's loss should not be celebrated in such a way.

I'm sorry if I expressed any fulsome happiness for US loss. Acctually Bush did much favor to China except decreasing US. I was just trying to clarify the whole situation.

And NYC is right. Economically we depend on each other, politically it's still zero-sum.

And then he sold arms to Tai.wan, began deploying missile defense systems, worked out security arrangements with Japan, Australia and SE Asia, placed US bases on China's western frontier, met with the DL and restarted nuclear weapons programs for which China is the only possible target.....

Let's face it: you are clueless about American policy, even when it comes to China.

Why would anyone other than a person full of hatred thank a terrorist? Do you think China immune from them? As China grows more powerful economically and continues to make resource deals for oil it is only a matter of time before the terrorists start to turn their attention to China. In fact it is Bush's military policies that has kept them so directly focused on the US. We will never e free of the risk from them but, there resolve may temper significantly if Obama changes or military policies significantly. Once the terrorists become less focused on the US as such an evil threat they will begin to turn their attention to others. Think about that before you go thanking terrorists.

Personally I hope that our new president will end all unilateral military actions now and in the future and we should also probably end or modify all agreements we have to come to the defense unilaterally of any of our allies. I know this sounds harsh but, promising to defend Israel or S.Korea from invasion is ridiculous. We have no business being the worlds police force. This is a job for world organizations like the United Nations and NATO.  Also due to their closer proximity I think the burden of dealing with any instabilities in the Korea's and middle east should fall on the shoulders of China and Russia. If or rather when a nuclear exchange takes place it will be these two Countries that are down wind of any radioactive fallout. Not the US. Also at this time none of those Countries possess the missile technology to directly threaten the US. On the other hand most of Russia and China are within reach for them.

I imagine the Chinese and Russian governments give more than just a passing thought to the fact that at least two very unstable governments (N.Korea and Pakistan) have nuclear weapons and others are desperate for them. I think it's time we actually bow to world pressure and pull out all of our military until such a time as our assistance is actually asked for. We should also end that missile shield bush wanted in Europe that Russia s so opposed to. Let them worry about a missile launch against one of their neighbors. Yes, it is time America backed off and let the rest of the world deal with the burden. Besides our economy could put those military billion$ to far better use at home. If those other Countries want to destroy each other I say go ahead. I think it is the US military presence that has kept them from doing it already. I can't even imagine what that region would be like now if when Iraq invaded Kuwait the US had stayed out of it and done nothing.

Anyone ever wonder about a 3rd world war? If it happens it will surely start in the middle east and will be triggered either by an event in Israel, Pakistan versus India or N.Korea invading S.Korea again. Russia will surely go on alert out of concern for what the US will do. China also is likely to go on full alert for the same reason and also because her Russian neighbor on full alert is also a concern. It is a well known fact that if N.Korea invaded the south their is no way the US military could stop them without using at least battlefield nuclear weapons. Would Russia and China tolerate this so close? Would they really trust the US to only target N.Korea? I doubt it and I don't blame them. If the US were to stay out of it and just let things play out there would be no 3rd world war risk.

Now I think there is a better solution to all of this. It's not perfect but, it's a start. It's also so radical I think some would say it impossible. I think militarily that NATO and the U.N. are useless these days as they can never get all their members to agree on anything. I think a new world military defense order is needed and here is how I think it should be. Are you ready? Hold on to your pants!

It should be a military policing organization who's sole purpose is to collectively intervene by what ever military or economic means necessary to prevent, repress or reverse any hostile action taken by any one Country against another. It should consist of ONLY three members. These three members should be China, Russia and the U.S.  I think only the worlds three greatest military powers are capable of this. The charter should clearly define what actions require the intervention of the three and that all three must at all times intervene together on an equal basis. This new organization should not answer to the U.N. or NATO other than to brief them on what actions will be or were taken. Part of the charter should also expressly require that any of the three must come to the aid of the other two should another Country or terrorist organization cause them harm. There should be no exceptions even for previous or current allies of the three member Countries. As an example should Israel unilaterally launch and all out attack on say Iran, Syria or Turkey then the three member Countries must immediately take action to end the conflict by any means necessary. Yes, that means the U.S. must use military force against one of her own allies but, that is what is necessary to ensure the rest of the world understands that the BIG 3 will not tolerate aggressive hostilities from anyone Country against another.

It is time for such a change. The world is become more dangerous every day and it is obvious that a great change in dealing with this is necessary.

Those are my thoughts. Feel free to rip into them or post your own ideas on what should be done. All I ask is that you do so with an open mind and without anger or prejudice.

I sympathize US dilemma as the only super power.

The world criticizes you as world police when you do, and when you don't do they say you are not taking your responsibility.

China is facing more and more such dilemma.

Yuan,

Absolutely. And the more power China gathers for itself, the more people will demand it intervene elsewhere, insist that they are corrupt plutocrats stealing the lives of people in the developing world and so on. It's already started in Africa...

The Chinese are beginning to learn that if you have more power than those around you, you have two choices: be greeted as liberators or be damned for inaction.

The real test of this may come sooner than China thinks as the two Korea's get closer to war.

The first choice should have two results: be greeted as liberators or spurned by flying shoes.

I agree with Satsu that war is not coming now. If it comes, I prefer inaction.
