The throwing of mandarin oranges on Chap Goh Mei(15th moon/night) is a Chinese tradition that signifies the end of the Chinese New Year and doubles as the Chinese Valentine’s Day where single women throw mandarin oranges into the lake hoping to find love.

Everything but the ones based on backward religious superstition.
Couldn't understand a lot of them because the Malay style pinyin is not understandable to people outside of Malaysia.

i was born in 1985, but it was before the Spring Festival, so i belong to Mouse year.....
2008 is going to be the Mouse year so according to tradition i need to wear red undies during the new year.....otherwise i will have bad luck through the year......

Well, I assume Hong Pau is somehow related to Hong Bao - which is the Chinese way of writing Hanyu Pinyin - but the rest are just not understandable to people in China. Perhaps to some that only speak one of the local dialects such as Hongkongese, but Hanyu Pinyin - that would be the pinyin for the China National language just isn't written that way.
Can you perhaps write your pinyin to correspond with Hanyu Pinyin or maybe Hanzi - but Modern Hanzi, not the antique style?
Then perhaps it will be understandable to those inside Greater China.

Actually that is incorrect.
In Hanyu Pinyin, Golden is "Huang Jin" and since "Jin" itself can just mean "metal' so is accompanied by "Huang" meaning yellow so Huang Jin is used to mean "Yellow Metal" - but Jin can be used, and often is, as an abbreviation, but "Kum?" Doesn't exist in Hanyu Pinyin.
"JInzi" is more correct for "golden" such as "Hongdi Jinzi" meaning "golden letters on a red background."
Must just be a problem relating to a Malay version of the very difficult to understand Wade-Giles form of pinyin created to make the Cantonese dialect conform to the British accent.

Not really. Hanyu Pinyin is Hanyu Pinyin and is the same no matter where one resides - if, that is, one is speaking Hanyu and writing Hanyu Pinyin.
The antiquated style of pinyin isn't used in Greater China anymore although still common among those that do not understand Hanyu and only speak one of the great many dialects and those that still use the old and very outmoded British attempt at romanizing the Cantonese dialect.
I see now though where you erred. Kumquat in Hanyu Pinyin is written as "Jinju" - guess since the Cantonese dialect is most common in Malaysia you don't understand the China National language.
Still, jinju are a big part of Lunar New Year - at least that is similar.

Oh! I see. You mean to say that it is Lacaterina that doesn't understand Modern Chinese - not you?
You use the antique style to assist her? OK, I understand.

I think caring is from Malaysia, and many Malaysian Chinese speak Cantonese, so he might not be very familiar with the Pinyin. In Taiwan, they use pinyin system too, but it is somewhat different from what is now used in Mainland China.
I understand most of what caring posts because we both speak Cantonese. But i agree that others may get quite confused.
