We got it wrong on HK, Time admits

China Daily: Ten years ago, Time's sister magazine, Fortune, predicted that the return of Hong Kong to the motherland would sound the death knell for the Pearl of the East. But in a cover story on its latest issue entitled "Hong Kong's future: Sunshine, with clouds", Time admits it made a mistake. The following are excerpts of the article.

The gummy gurus.

Let this be a salutary lesson to those who are still in doubt that the Western media is up the creek.  The flagship publications like the Times, The Economist , Fortune and Wall Street Journal are all guilty of over-reach . They proffer opinions and predictions about China from a range of wannabes, who have just half knowledge of things but set themselves up as  " experts ". The predictions that Hong Kong will see blood running down Nathan Road and investments will take flight .......blah blah blah were so off the mark it was tragic ( for the " experts " ).

10 years later, most of those " gurus " have disappeared into oblivion. With it the gentlemanly step of apologies . Alas , we cannot expect such civilized principles I suppose. This Time cover is at least a good mannered and mature move to say they were wrong. I congratulate them on this move. We must keep bearing in mind that the army of sullied and half baked " China experts " out there in media land are still mouthing off platitudes and inexactitudes by the truck loads. Readers Beware !!

Western media simply is the mouthpiece of their imperialist master.

What quality do you expect out of them?

Can you send a copy to Mencus?

He can read it while reclining in his leather chair and sucking on his pipe.

I do have a problem with the excerpt article though.

Who are the Brits to call themselves the "old" empire in front of the chinese? Hong Kong was a stolen Jewel from the real and legitimate royalty and it was rightfully returned in 1997. Definitely not passed from the "old" empire to the new power.

And what about it being the cleanest of the chinese city? I thought Singapore is the cleanest chinese city?

Singapore is a multicultural Singaporean city, not a Chinese city.
Singapore's citizens include ethnic Chinese, Malays and Indians as well as other groups.

Politically Singapore is not Chinese, ethnically Singapore is not simply Chinese.

To say Singapore is "Chinese" is to denigrate the many other cultures which contribute, along with Chinese, to that great city-state.

Some people "aren't kiddin jus correctin" and meanwhile on the "Time cover" the mere looks of red neon stars just stirs very little emotion they took a very lovely ceremonious occasion and "Pop Art' it",  maybe it was placed into the "kiddy garden" of "Time" writers and they flipped a coin and decided to "shoot IT down" wasting everybody's TIME.

Thinning ranks of the ill-wishers.

It is my observation that over the past 50 odd years since the founding of the PRC , the Western press and its army of " Chinese experts " have barely or rarely got anything right about China. The general theme was one of derision at the start. " China is just a passing phase " and " our Chinese will resume control soon ". This charade took on good and solid traction into the 60s because of the self harm episodes in China ( GLF & CR ) . There was glee, gloat and smirk all round , with the rubbing of hands and the coloured balloons at the ready to celebrate the collapse of China . As the saying goes  " My impending demise was greatly exaggerated " shouted the PRC back !

Since the end of the 80s these same " China experts " have had to revise their vocabulary . The nudge nudge wink wink  brigade has given over to the " oh my god " battalions. The more they ill-wish China, the more they had to swallow the bitter pills of disappointment and despair. If only eggs on faces can be quantified !

There is still a company or two out there who make a living cursing and creating bad karma for China. Their ranks are thinning and the are being scoffed at , as they should be. We have a few pretenders here in the forum , who are stridently still tugging at that lost cause. Graffiti of bad-mouth sloganeering and cliche still pour forth from those chasm of ill-will and mischief. It is a side-show we can afford to laugh at ; their predecessors were never right anyway . Zhongguo wansui .

Sorry, Zuffaro, I'm just too used to posters making provocative statements, I didn't cotton on that you were just having a laugh.
