Congratulations China - shutting down slavery
A report on the BBC website show China's progress in cutting corruption and exploitation.
According to the report (citing Chinese news sources) a CCP official's son in Shanxi ran a brickworks and imprisoned slave workers under horrible conditions.

'Slaves' rescued from China firm
By Michael Bristow
BBC News, Beijing
Thirty-one dirty and disorientated workers have been rescued from a brickwork factory in China, where they were being held as virtual slaves.
Eight workers were so traumatised by their experiences that they were only able to remember their names.
The labourers had to work unpaid for 20 hours at a time, and were only given bread and water in return.
The brickworks, in the poor inland province of Shanxi, is owned by the son of the local Communist Party secretary.
Local police told the BBC that the owner, Wang Binbin, had been arrested, and that his father, Wang Dongji, was under investigation.
Several other people have also been arrested, although the foreman is still on the run.
Harsh regime
According to a report in the Beijing News, citing the Shanxi Evening News, the rescued workers had been duped into working at the factory.
Once there, they faced a harsh regime. One man was even reported to have been beaten to death with a hammer, because he did not work fast enough.
When police raided the brickworks they discovered foul-smelling workers who had been wearing the same clothes for a year.
They had no facilities to wash, and they had not had their hair cut or brushed their teeth.
"The grime on their bodies was so thick it could be scraped off with a knife," the Beijing News said.
They had burns over their bodies after being made to carry bricks that had not cooled down properly.
Police are now arranging for the workers to get the wages they should have been paid, and then they will send them home, although the eight disorientated workers cannot remember where that is.
Local people said the brickworks, near Linfen, would have been closed down a long time ago had it not been for the protection of the party secretary.
Those who have assisted in rescuing those poor oppressed workers are to be congratulated, the "slave owners" should be spending many years behind bars.
Well done to the authorities who are working hard to stamp out this sort of behaviour.

A good story ec.
There has been a lot of this type of thing on the Chinese news and the CCP has made it clear that no government officials are immune from prosecution for corruption, no matter how senior their position.
Hu Jintao has set his sights on helping those left behind during the years of economic expansion and is to be congratulated. He is a fine statesman performing a very difficult task.

Yep, credit where it's due and there should be more incentive to report these sorts of crimes.
The move by the national government to target corrupt officials is a move which can only benefit China in the future and all reforms to this end need to be encouraged. This is where I think that an independent judiciary and the rule of law may help China with these sorts of reforms.

ec. It's not that I disagree with you. The things you mention are important and it is moving more and more that way.
We are already seeing big improvements in the judiciary for civil suits and is only a matter of time.
My opinion has always been that China has come a long, long way since 1976. I don't believe that many have a true picture of life prior to 1976 and so do not understand the immense progress since Deng Xiaoping. I always believe that rather than pointing out what has not been done, we should congratulate and so encourage the current leadership.
I believe that Hu Jintao is a very genuine leader and statesman and we should not under estimate his resolve or the enormity of the task at hand. A country can only progress at such a rate that the population can cope with. Despite the huge reforms and modernization, a huge percentage of the population lack basic education and still look to their government to care for them much like a parent. That will change in time and what I do disagree with is a black and white attitude that China can operate as any other western country at this stage of its development. China is world away from the west in its culture and the somewhat naivety of the population.
So for me, Hats of to Hu Jintao and I wish him the best of luck and have a lot of faith in his vision for China.

As my wife says, "We shall see..."
It will be interesting how far up the food chain this purge will go as far as corruption is concerned. It will also be interesting to see if anyone from the PLA gets caught up in this clean up effort.

What's important is improvement. It's not hard to find negatives about any country and improvement is what we should wish for.

That's the benefit of having a strong central government:
The ability to enforce certain policy "efficiently" when it sets its mind to it.

Does anyone here think the "culprit" should be handed a death sentence? And if the court did, what would be your reaction to it?

But one needs to be able to discuss and criticise the problems to be able to move on. As the article says, the only reason this place stayed in business was because the boss had political protection that silenced dissent. The central government can't be everywhere at once, nor can it expect people to have the confidence to make annonymous tip-offs frequently enough because if they're found out they'd be in real trouble. Equally there's no point going to the Police if they already know but won't do anything.
What is needed is for people like this to be able to rely on the Constitution 100% to say what is going on, with no caveats about criticising politicians or whatever - those caveats are often abused by people who want to make a profit by breaking the law, so they just class the critic as a "public enemy" or whatever (or just send some hired goons around). Really it's time to make a choice on free speech - the government can't have its cake and eat it.

Oh please mencus, you really are a block head.
India has a so called democracy. I just watched a doco on prostitution in India. They found 14 women huddled together in a room the size of my toilet with a secret trap door in. What did the police do when they raided the place. Allowed them all to run away.
That was after the local police explained that they thought prostitution was good for their society.
Bangladesh has a so called democracy. I just watched a doco on how the military just took power with the blessing of the called "Friday club" made up of the ambassadors of U.K, USA, Australia, Japan and a few others. They then proceeded to round up thousands and murder 100, all with the okay from their democratic pals.
You are so inane and closed minded that you can’t see reality. You and ec should start your own thread together and I promise I’ll stay away.
China needs a strong government, not one that lets child molesters, murderers and other creaps like you have get off lightly. They just found a guy in our area that raped 12 girls of around 11 and 12. He will be disposed of and good riddance.
Your slant on China is totally unrealistic. You can bleat all you like. In the meantime the government here seems to be getting on with the job.
It seems typical from foreigners like you, when the government does it's job you find a negative.
I might remind you again, 1,350,000,000 people many of whom are totally uneducated.
Sometimes I wonder at what actually happens in the fairy world of some of the foreigners on this forum.

I agree, behind bars is fine, on the end of a rope is not.

If anyone's a blockhead, it's you. I didn't say one word about democracy. I was talking about the ability to report and discuss law-breaking regardless of who the criminal or his family is, without fear of criminal prosecution on the pretext of it being anti-government or whatever.
QUOTE:

Actually the problem is you are so blinkered and obsessed with slagging off democracy that you have reflex reactions and completely miss the point of someone's post.
What you need to do is use the "little grey cells" inside your head more efficiently so you stop making yourself look stupid, rather than make assumptions about what people are arguing because you're too lazy to read carefully - that or the number of little grey cells you have is insufficient to conduct even basic tasks such as writing on forums.

Indeed, or at least not come out until he is past his working age.

Please forgive me mencus for I know not what I do.
I just like to have fun with brain dead idiots who like to lay back in their leather lounges and tell Chinese people what's good for them.
Did you ever go to China mencus?
If you did, did you ever leave the Sheraton?

Glad to see that once you're exposed for being a complete fool you resort to cheap tricks - just vindicates my opinion of you. Of course one would hope you can admit you made a mistake and move on, but sadly I guess that is too much to expect from someone lacking as much humility as you do.
