The way I see it, the appointment has no political connotation and link. It just signifies a change to allow more abled men to manage the country.
Regarding multi-party, China already is multi-party, albeit with Chinese characteristics.

There is only own definition of the word. Chinese characteristics means nothing. It is just a convenient place-holder for ten thousands kilos of bullsh*t.

Well, again tell us about the fantastic goverment in your country! Where is that?
Of course another cowardly attack with no comparison with what you are talking about.
We might as as be attacking Slugs because we don't like the look of them! No reasons why. No comparisons to other creatures. Just attack them and run away like a coward.

I am French, and we vote on sunday to elect a president. One candidate is a 2nd generation immigrant, the other is a woman.
And then we elect the national assembly, which will decide which parties the president will have to cope with for the reforms.

I agree!
Are you chinese? If not, congratulate! The best way to solve the "chinese problems" is abruption.Like Soviet Russia and Korea, not for the nation, but for the people.China is large,as to the hole Europe. We have make a "one country-two sysytem",It's not far to "muti country-multi system".I believe this benefits everyone.

I've always though that federalization is the only thing that can save China from it's doom. Just like Russia.
The key word is responsability. The bigger the structure, the smaller the responsability in the chain.
The problem with confucean countries, is that they are overwelmed by the idea of a moral state, an easy target for all kind of totalitarian regime. Japan and Korea both are very nationalist, but wealth brought them democracy.

Seems it always swings around to westerners thinking they have a wonderful democracy because they have a choice of two parties. I really don't understand the logic at all.
At every opportunity they rattle of the democratic rubbish. Go to you local MP and ask why your country doesn¡¯t govern by referendum. They¡¯ll say it¡¯s too hard. Rubbish, in the modern era of electronics it would be as easy as pay TV.
It seems to be always a case of a choice of two in the west. Yes there may be minor parties but they can never win. It's all controlled by two powerful parties. They get elected (a choice of two) and do what they like. I constantly hear westerners complaining about their government but they are really powerless to do much. Most of the things they complain about they never voted for.
THERE IS ONLY ONE TRUE DEMOCRATIC MODEL WHICH IS CONTROL BY REFERENDUM.
It would be simple to implement but will never happen because western governments don¡¯t trust the intelligence of their own people. They will never give up the power and that's a fact.
So whether it's China or USA or Australia the democratic arguments are just splitting hairs.
China's "one hair" is doing better than just about every country in the world. They have taken China to a world power in the shortest time possible and are starting to worry those two haired democracies.
I reckon when the west has a real democracy they can start preaching to China. Not everything is perfect here but they sure are working on it and faster than any western two party system, controlled by pressure groups, money and power.
Sorry ec, I don;t see game, set and match at all. Howard just knocked back a referendum on the nuclear issue and said the election was enough. That means you have two parties and take it or leave it on what they do.
Of course ec, you could choose not to vote and get fined. Ha what a joke. A true democracy that fines you if you don't vote.

Oh I see...so your saying both china and western countries have a problem?
Where did I say China was perfect on the question of democracy.
I said you're government aint perfect either so don't preach to China.
I said there is little difference between the west and china. You answered by talking about China and disregarding your own lack of democracy.
Seems to me when it comes to China, foreigners love pointing the finger without facing up to their own lack of democracy. I hear it time and time again.
Fact is, a two party system doesn't make a democracy. If you wanna believe you have what you have not, that's your choice. If China is so bad why is she able to over take other nations. I don't hear many complaints in China, just a few o/s Chinese and a lot of foreigners. You¡¯re welcome to your two party dictatorship if it makes you feel warm and fuzzy.

You mean one is a party to the far right! So if the French vote for someone to the far right do we accuse the French people of being a bunch of racists? Its something that everyone say about the French, that they are a racist nation. Is that true or am I extrapolating too much?
Are you one of the racist Frenchies?

Actually, you can be fined if you don't turn up at the polling booth or get a postal ballot.
You don't have to fill out the ballot paper and you can deliberately "spoil" it as a protest.
I was against "compulsory voting" for a while, but it does get the participation rate up and for many it encourages them to make a choice at least.

Hi EC
"""""I was against "compulsory voting" for a while, but it does get the participation rate up and for many it encourages them to make a choice at least. """"
Yes it does but it's not exactly "democratic" is it?
It also means that a large number of people that have no interest are forced to vote.
On a brighter note, Aus customs were very good for the first time in three years.

I agree, I do have an issue with the "democratic" nature of compulsory voting.
I balance that with the fact that casting a valid vote is not actually compulsory (and if it is, they don't know if you've deliberately failed to correctly mark the ballot paper) and therefore it's the attendance and crossing off your name which is the compulsory part and there are many more onerous requirements with modern society such as taxation, claiming benefits and so on.

Huh, I've never actually seen you successfully put anyone down, Chunder.
You've tried to, you've made yourself look pretty stupid, but nope, haven't seen a successful putdown or winning debate from you yet.
Keep trying!

Development of a two-party or multi-party system.
The most likely scenario would be a parting on the right, with especially hard-line Communists breaking from the incumbents. To break to the left would be impossible. However, once a formal split occurs without violence, then the evolving parties can shift left and center. One thing that is not considered in the USA is that China is very much aware of its Communist ideals, its planned economy, and its market economy. So it is very likely that a mature Marxist state can survive.
Under a Communist system, the government taxes 100 percent of all profits. In a market system like the USA, the government takes a share of profits in taxes and lets owners keep a share for themselves. This system has two advantages. The first is that it makes collecting taxes a lot easier. The second is that it encourages busineses to direct resources into the hottest markets in search of economic profits.

China can hardly be called a communist system, and in fact never was in the true sense of the word.
Just as foreign countries never were full democracies in the true sense of the word.
Both now seem very close to one another.
The only difference is that China is using it's money wisely with strong leadership. Unlike most foreign countries spending every cent it can, (and a lot it doesn't have), to buy votes and appease pressure groups at every election.
I don't think China needs a two party system and I think a two party system is very damaging. China actually has a unique opportunity to perhaps develop a totally new system under one party that is more democratic than anything in foreign countries.
Two party systems are seriously over rated.

Maybe one day China will have a communist party that is a real communist party.
Not just in name.
