Kevin Rudd concerned over racist attacks on Indians

he alleged racial attacks against Indian students in Australia has become a great concern for the Indian government. After the Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd showed his concern at the series of attacks, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Friday evening called the Australian PM to convey his concerns.

Ministry of External Affairs has said that government of India is very concerned about the attacks on Indians and Indian consulate in Australia is in constant touch with Indian students.

The Ministry also said that the Australian envoy, who was summoned on Friday in New Delhi, told that Indian students feel vicious attacks are increasing.

The Australian PM Kevin Rudd called up PM Manmohan Singh earlier on Friday.

External Affairs Ministry has said that continued unease can have an adverse affect on a sector that shows such promise.

The apparently racial attacks on Indian students in Australia took on bigger proportions on Friday as one of the victims continued to be in a coma. In the last couple of weeks, there has been a spate of attacks on Indians, the latest being the attack on Baljinder Singh who was stabbed by two men in the abdomen as he was leaving a railway station.

The Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has intervened in the matter as India made its concerns public.

"I am concerned about any act of violence in the streets and suburbs of Australia's cities and towns and particularly when we are obviously hosts to students from around the world. It is appalling in every sense. Any act of violence, any decent human being just responds with horror at the sorts of attack which have occurred recently," Rudd said.

Earlier, External Affairs Ministry summoned Australian High Commissioner John McCarthy in New Delhi to convey its concerns and ask his government to prevent attacks on them.

McCarthy was called by Secretary (East) in the Ministry of External Affairs N Ravi to convey India's concerns, responding to which the Australian envoy said his government is taking steps to stop such incidents.

"I was asked to come to the Ministry of External Affairs to discuss the recent attacks on Indian students in Australia. Mr Ravi conveyed Indian concerns very clearly and urged that we take steps to ensure that these sorts of incidents do not occur," McCarthy said after his meeting at MEA.

McCarthy condemned the attacks on Indian students and noted that similar statements had been made by several senior leaders in Australia.

Five held in Australia

Meanwhile, Australian police have arrested five teenagers in connection with the recent spate of attacks on Indian students here, and charged one of them for attempted murder.

A 17-year-old boy was charged with attempted murder after four Indian students, including Shravan Kumar, were brutally attacked by gatecrashers at a party in Melbourne's north on Saturday night, according to the Victorian police.

Kumar, 25, who was attacked with a screwdriver at a birthday party continued to remain critical and is still on life support.

Another 18-year-old was questioned in relation to the attack but has since been released.

These little bastards, who are attacking foreign students, should be arrested and held without bail before their trial.
As I have said elsewhere, the cops should go into those at-risk areas, undercover and "bait" would be thugs.

In the meantime I urge foreign students in those western suburbs to take extra care.

The cops are ineffectual emu.

They take an hour to respond to anything.

They are more interested in revenue raising than getting their hands dirty.

Then the courts are a joke.

If I was Indian I wouldn't come to Australia to study.

Trust me manoj, Kevin Rudd couldn't care less.

The whole system is screwed and they will do nothing.

They need more jails and there's no votes there.

Not really. ZG does exaggerate a little but there's some truth to his allegation that there's a lot of emphasis on the "profitable" side of law enforcement, eg automatic speed and traffic fines.

The big issue in some of those suburbs is other types of crime, particularly drugs, burglary etc.
Only now that there is an increasing outcry about these attacks on overseas students is there likely to be a suitable response. It should be remembered that along with the Indian High commissioner and Indian media, the local Australian media has been at the forefront of bringing these attacks to the attention of the public.
At least one victim, who was intending to return to India, has been overwhelmed with offers of assistance, from ordinary anglo-Australians, so that he's decided to stay here and complete his studies.

A good hard caning for the perpetrators might be a suitable punishment.

Emu, I know Australians are kind people and I don't differentiate people based on races such as Asians or the Anglos. The world is big enough to accommodate all the races of the people. No more discrimination. It would be great if Australia as a nation stands upto this type of horrors and I hope that justice would be bought in this case.........

Case in point emu...

A lady I know with a young child arrived home and noticed a window open.
Not knowing whether they were still inside she called the police....

... they arrived over 2 hours later.

The police are a joke and the court system a bigger joke....

Break into a handicapped guys house, set him on fire and almost kill him......3 years?

I know as you do that crime is not everywhere but it's growing and will continue to grow.

Manoj...again too we must state that much of this type of crime is ethnically based and not long resident Australians.

We can hardly call it Australian racism if people are let in and then congregate in ethnic groups and attack each other.
