Sanlu to recall milk powder as baby dies

The Sanlu Group recalled about 700 tons of its baby milk food, as one of the infants diagnosed with kidney stones after being fed the food died in Gansu province Thursday.
One of the country's largest dairy products' makers said its milk food had been contaminated with a chemical called melamine. The announcement came after the company conducted an internal investigation.

A Gansu provincial health department spokesman said that altogether 59 infants have been diagnosed with kidney stones in the province this year. Reports said many of them had been fed the same brand of milk food. No infants were diagnosed with kidney stones last year or in 2006 in the province.

Health experts said there is a link between melamine and kidney stones.
The first case was reported by the People's Liberation Army No 1 Hospital in Gansu's provincial capital of Lanzhou on June 28.
Similar cases have been reported from across the country - from the Ningxia Hui autonomous region, Gansu and Shaanxi to Jiangsu, Shandong, Anhui and Hunan provinces. But the total number of cases is not known.

Samples of the milk food were tested in a State-run laboratory, the country's food and drugs watchdog said. The Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ) launched a probe on Tuesday.

A spokesperson for the Ministry of Health, which is helping with the investigation, said traces of cyanuramide that can cause kidney stones were found in Sanlu-brand milk products.

Earlier, Sanlu had said its products did not have any quality problems because they had passed State food safety tests. Yang Li, spokesperson for Shijiazhuang-based company, said a Sanlu team has left for Gansu to conduct its own probe.

Another Sanlu official said the milk food might have been mislabeled, or "someone" might have been selling spurious products under the company's brand, according to Xinhua.

Sanlu Group, based in Shijiazhuang, Hebei Province, is partly owned by New Zealand dairy export giant Fonterra Cooperative Group.

In a statement carried by the New Zealand Press Association, Fonterra said its Chinese partner was moving to ensure its products were safe.

Sanlu products have caused food scares before, too. In 2005, Tianjin authorities seized hundreds of cases of mislabeled Sanlu yogurt.

Kidney stones are small, solid masses that form when salt or minerals normally found in urine crystallize inside the kidney. They can move out of the kidney if they become too big and cause infection, and even lead to permanent kidney damage.

In 2004, at least 13 babies in Anhui province died after drinking spurious milk food, which investigators later found had no nutritional value. The deaths rocked the country and triggered widespread probes into food and health safety.

I would look very closely at any company in competition with Sanlu who would benefit from the Sanlu name being discredited.

There are a few questions here I would like to raise.

China's Ministry of Health said on Thursday that Melamine was "highly suspected" to have contaminated batches of Sanlu milk formula. Sanlu recalling milk formula made before 6 August. Here are the questions.

1) Wasn't Melamine the substance that kill many American pets last year ? Those people want to kill our babies just like they kill American pets ?
2) Before 6 August, that is a year or more than a year after the American pet deaths, haven't they learnt a lesson about honesty and quality monitoring ?
3) Rural buyers said they bought the milk powder cheaper than usual. Why cheaper than ususal ? and now we are close to finding out Melamine . Why ? Is this a deliberate act ?
4) Are lives less important than profits ?
5) Despite the execution of China's corrupt official last year due to the scandals, why corruption in this area still exist ? Are the officials really taking Chinese laws seriously ? or they think this is just a joke ? Do as you like ?
6) Why didn't Sanlu answer the calls from foreign journalists ? Are they hiding something ?
7) Are Chinese business people and corporates concerned about China ?
8) Why after 4 years, this kind of bad practice in baby milk powder still go on ?
9) What measures is the government taking ?
10 ) How will the culprits be punished ?

Please to all the reporters, businessment with/without conscience, officials think about this, please read it.

Do those unscrupulous businessmen really consider themselves human and Chinese ? why they produce substandard products to harm people ?

BOYCOTT SANLU

THEY ARE HIDING SOMETHING. THIS IS THE 2ND TIME THEY COMMITED CRIME AGAINST CHINESE PEOPLE.

The only thing who will avoid such drama

1) traceability system : you know WHAT you eat and WHO made it (Most of ch food product are insufficient). things like bio label in china are all but trustable

2) peoples around the world must fight to obtain a law that obligate companies to proove the news food product are safe before selling them. this point is the most difficult to get, as it is seen as an economic obstacle. And This is the price our children pay.

Quote from Xinhua

"Despite Chinese support for domestic brands, society cannot help getting angry at Sanlu and the quality watchdog. When problems arise it's always easy to blame someone else the way Sanlu has done to dairy farmers and milk dealers. But isn't the company itself to blame for the tragedy? Those children could be healthy had the company conducted its own quality control.

Yet, until Friday afternoon, not a word was said of the incident on the company's website, let alone an apology.

The quality inspection administration, too, has a larger role to play in facing the country's abundance of product safety problems, ranging from milk powder, seafood, pork and duck eggs to toothpaste and children's wear, among others, in recent years."

Xinhua is right

people in China should boycott Sanlu, don't use their products, they don't face up responsibility, only blame others.

This is easy to say if you have enough money to buy more expensive and perhaps more trustworthy products. Not all people can afford to buy high quality products. I believe that it is the damned duty of a quality and health supervisory body to order fraudulent companies like  Sunlu to shut down production and force them into liquidation. At the same time the company management must be held responsible and be brought to justice. If this happens two or three times and the news about such draconian measures are reported on TV and in newspapers the situation will quickly change for the better, I bet.

Yes, you are quite right. I did not state anything different. Actually food prices are also not that low in Germany and many people go to a Discounter. They have no bad reputation, Aldi is know ...
It always needs either a drama as is Sunlu's case or a whistleblower. We had several fraudulent food cases over here, such as relabeled meat, contaminated rice, etc. Companies have to close down and the proprietors/management  has to be punished.

At least this one is not a substitution racket.E.g Wheat for baby milk powder.

Poor inspection procedures.Sanlu can not regain consumer confidence. It should not exist after this.

That's right, this company should be permanently shut down, this is the 2nd freaking time they do this , and so far they don't even have the decency to say sorry at least.

If anyone here have any friends or know something using Sanlu products, please tell them to refund them and NEVER BUY FROM THEM AGAIN.

Sanlu is the problem of China but food poisoning is not a Chinese problem alone. Here is a report from yesterday about a new food scandal in Japan. No country is safe from this and this includes th US as well. Or why do you think the import of beef from the US into several East Asian countries is prohibited? . All that has to be done is to take drastic steps by the local authorities.

Half the tainted rice already sold for food

A survey by the agriculture ministry has found that Mikasa Foods may have already sold 705 tons, or half of the rice tainted with pesticides or other toxins, as fit for human consumption.

The ministry says the Osaka-based company bought the imported rice totaling 1,407 tons from the government and trading firms since 2003.

A pesticide called methamidophos was found in 800 tons of the rice. The ministry says 229 tons of the amount was sold to caterers and confectioners in Tokyo and elsewhere.
The company also sold another 476 tons to breweries despite knowing that the rice was tainted with traces of another type of pesticide or a toxin produced by mold. The ministry suspects that some of the tainted rice has already been consumed.

After carefully inquire into the matter of this Japanese rice problem.

I just found out that China is also involved here, but this is the scenario

1) The Japanese firms bought the rice with contamination from the Japanese government for industrial use -glue and paper making.
2) The Japanese firm only sold a fraction of that rice for industrial use
3) They then sold the rest of the rice for human consumption because the boss really needed the money.
4) The rice was imported from multiple sources, such as China, Vietnam and the USA.
5) The imported rice was clearly marked unfit for consumption.

The rice was clearly marked as unfit for human consumption therefore the subject of origin was not important over here. It is the greed of some companies and individuals that is to be blamed and this applies to all food scandals, be they in the West, in Japan or in China.

Btw, part of the rice was also imported from Thailand, hence four import countries but, once again, none is to be blamed because this rice was not destined for public sale.

Emergency response begins over milk powder incident

BEIJING -- China's State Council, the Cabinet, has started the first-class national food safety emergency response to deal with the tainted Sanlu milk powder incident that has caused kidney stones in at least 432 babies.

The State Council has set up a national leading group comprising officials from the Health Ministry, the quality watchdog and local governments for the incident.
A preliminary investigation has confirmed the Sanlu baby milk powder contaminated by melamine was the cause of kidney stones in infants, said an official statement released here Saturday evening.

The melamine substance found in some of the Sanlu products was deliberately added to increase the protein percentage in raw milk or milk powder, it said.

The statement said the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and the State Council attached high importance to the issue, urging all-out efforts in treating the affected babies. The patients will be given free medical treatment and the cost will be shouldered by the government.
Meanwhile, the State Council urged a thorough overhaul of the milk powder market, directing the Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ) to join other departments to check all the brands of baby formulas circulating in the market, and immediately pull those disqualified products off shelves.

The reason why the Sanlu baby formula was contaminated must be found out as soon as possible, the State Council said, directing the local government and relevant departments to overhaul all the links including the milk powder production, cow raising, raw milk collection and dairy processing.

Based on the findings, the criminals and all those responsible would be severely punished, it said.

Relevant local government and departments should draw lessons from the incident and improve the food safety and quality supervision mechanism to ensure the food safety of the public, it added.

The State Council has directed the provincial government of Hebei, where the Sanlu group is based, to halt production of the group. An investigation team set up by the health ministry and other departments is also in the province to probe into the cause, and the quality watchdog AQSIQ is conducting an all-round overhaul of baby milk powder producers across the country.
