... for the rest of your life - for such misery exists everyday - or you can help, in any small or large way, those who have survived this latest event.
Not going to lie - the memories of the past will always hurt like Hell - but there are people in now that need attention.
I am sorry if this is not the comfort that you seek, but it is the only refuge that I can give.

Yeah, yeah, I agree absolutely with tradervic. As the Chinese grieve, they mustn't lose their head and ignore the dangers of exploitative gweilos lurking round the corner waiting to strike any moment any time.

I worry about the huge donations that China received from these calculating people. I hope China accounts carefully for every cent of the foreign donations she receives, use them wisely for the victims and keep the rest for similar natural disasters that might strike their donor countries.
All donations should be properly accounted for and applied for its appropriate use or saved up like I had explained.
There is plenty of work to be done.

i'm so much in pain & in grief these days...i did my (my entire family i should say) upmost charity for the past few days at chinatown & the american red cross for monetary donations. the people of HK & Taiwan are really doing an amazingly job in contributing money to the szechuan's victims; they have (the rich & famous) donated abundance monetary funds. for now, i'm only pray for the best for china's the last half year left of 2008 & before the GAMES.

I know, but it's hard to think rationally in front of those things.
At this point you will need to temper and balance your passion with your logic. This disaster is not over, not even close - and every available cool head is needed.
The time for closure will come - but it is not now. It is time for search, rescue, comfort of sick and injured, and burial of the dead.

NW,
Thank you very much for all these photos. Some are very hard to watch, some give hope. I don't find the right words to say more.
You welcome. You're right, some photos are not too suitable to see.
I just want to show who's really spare most effort in this difficult time.

He's saved after pressed for more than 7 hours. But he didn't make it at the end, too much bleeding.

I've seen pictures where the victims had their eyes covered after being rescued. Do you know why?
Author: mengzhi Time: 2008-5-21 07:26 AM
Dear heyyou ,
Rescued victims have what is called " photophobia " ie they are unaccustomed to normal lights after having been trapped in darkness for varying periods of time . Even normal sunlight is too strong . In order to protect their eyes ( and allow slow adjustment over several days ) it has the immediate effect of preventing headaches and abnormal squinting of the eyes , both of which are unpleasant .
Author: tomson_zhan Time: 2008-5-21 09:46 AM Subject: please the God open your eyes, don't you?
why did the God not open your eyes to look at the miserable scenery? why did you let so many people lose their lives, family, parents.etc? why?!

Moving emotional photos from Northwest -
Incredible sorrow for China - for all Chinese - we all live in a very sad China at this time -
but a strong and determined China just the same -
she will rise from the tears with a new inner strength -
a China more than ever before, combined as one for the greater good of the many Chinese -

Below is a poem by Mary Elizabeth Frye (1904-2004) that I want to share with the people affected by the earthquake:
Do Not Stand at My Grave and Weep
Do not stand at my grave and weep,
I am not there, I do not sleep.
I am in a thousand winds that blow,
I am the softly falling snow.
I am the gentle showers of rain,
I am the fields of ripening grain.
I am in the morning hush,
I am in the graceful rush
Of beautiful birds in circling flight,
I am the starshine of the night.
I am in the flowers that bloom,
I am in a quiet room.
I am in the birds that sing,
I am in each lovely thing.
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there. I do not die.
I have attempted to translate this:

Known to the EU as "Halo", this heavy-duty Russian helicopter Me-26 can airlift up to a hundred fully-armed paratroopers or a heavy tank in wartime.
For a while, cities rendered totally inaccessible by massive landslides were supplied by helicopters including this one.
For emergency airlift of staff and heavy equipment such as caterpillars and cranes to such inaccessible areas, Me-26 was one of the pieces of equipment that had played an instrumental role.

At midnight on May 12, it looked like rush hour on the highway between Chengdu and Dujiangyan, two cities in southwest China's Sichuan Province. Cab drivers stepped up to the plate and put their cabs on the line. As Dujiangyan lay in ruins, wrecked by an earthquake that struck at 2:28 p.m. that day, drivers took the initiative and began to ferry the injured to hospitals in Chengdu. On each return journey to Dujiangyan, they took food and water to survivors. All the while the drivers were aware that there was the danger of an aftershock.
Nobody paid cab fares and no request came from the government. After hearing reports on the radio that several hours after the quake, there was limited vehicles to transport the wounded to hospitals in Chengdu, more than 1,200 cab drivers in the city left their families behind and risked their lives to help strangers. Thanks to their rescue efforts, many critically injured people made it to Chengdu in time to be saved.
Not one of these drivers wanted his or her name made public. One cab driver who took part in the rescue, was heard on a local radio station saying, "When I saw the highway was covered by our taxis, I felt especially proud of being one of them."
On May 13, Vice Governor of Sichuan Li Chengyun was moved to tears when he publicly thanked the selfless efforts of the cab drivers in Chengdu. Chinese netizens left millions of messages on the Internet, expressing their respect for the cab drivers and dubbed them "the greatest cab drivers in the world."
Stories of cab drivers in Chengdu warmed the hearts of a nation reeling from the news of the worst earthquake in China in 30 years and galvanized people to help in whatever way they can in a monumental show of unity.
Ren Hongbin is an ordinary resident of Mianyang, a small city also devastated by the earthquake. Since May 13, Ren and the other 23 members of an off-road vehicle club organized themselves into a rescue team and transferred the wounded from seismic zones to medical facilities in safer areas. "I wanted to do something for society," said Ren to Xinhua News Agency. He said that although their efforts were very limited, they could accelerate the pace of rescue by a little bit.
Hundreds of private vehicles were also seen scurrying along whatever roads were accessible to take milk, bottled water, food and clothing to the victims. "We just want to hand over these things to them and say some comforting words to encourage them," said Zeng Damao, who was trying to get through to Beichuan County, one of the most damaged areas, according to Xinhua News Agency.
Help came in many forms and shapes. At midnight May 12, Chengdu citizens were still standing in long lines, waiting to donate blood. According to a report of Xinhua News Agency, one man in his 50s said, "I am a laid-off worker, and I don't have much money. But I can donate blood for the injured."
Outside southwest China, people search for latest information about the rescue operations, donating money, blood and rescue materials. The Ministry of Civil Affairs had received donations of 603 million yuan (about $86.2 million) as of morning at May 15. In Beijing, only one day after the earthquake struck, university students and local residents stood in lines to donate blood, while overseas Chinese are also donating money back to their motherland.
When a natural disaster strikes, it is not enough to just rely on the government to fulfill all requirements. Organized people power will also be crucial to the rescue operation. The whole nation is making an effort to help. With the whole nation's unity, confidence and perseverance, China will overcome this tragedy.

Healing from within
By Ye Jun (China Daily)
Updated: 2008-05-28 06:57
Psychiatrist Wang Jian is used to conducting consultations with patients in a single, quiet room, where there are paintings on the wall and comfortable couches to sit on.
But lately, Wang has had to half-squat when counseling quake victims in a factory in Pengzhou. The temporary shelter is for those made homeless by the May 12 quake in Sichuan province.
There are more than 2,000 people on the site.
"Everybody has a story," said Wang, from Beijing Huilongguan Hospital.
One 30-year-old mother had lost her daughter to the disaster. The woman refused to speak or eat for two days before a psychologist helped her contact her mother and sister.
Another quake victim, a 12-year-old girl, had refused to talk, eat or drink, until a psychologist asked her if she had anything she wanted to tell him.
"I miss my younger brother," she cried.
Along with 21 colleagues, Wang spent two days talking with quake victims at the shelter. Twenty victims with severe psychological problems were screened, and Wang's team focused on them during the second day of work.
"Some people have shown fear, anxiety, and depression. They have nightmares, and difficulty falling asleep. These are natural responses to the disaster," Wang told China Daily by telephone.
"Other people show symptoms of elusion, heightened vigilance, and painful flashbacks. One person had slight symptoms of mania, and two had schizophrenia. But, generally speaking, most people's moods are relatively stable."
Wang said the fastest and most effective way to help these people is to use "psychological aid", in which the psychologists comfort and pacify victims through conversation. They also prescribe medicines for those with more serious problems.
But, he said he has had to adapt traditional treatment methods, such as group sharing sessions, breathing and muscle relaxation exercises, to suit the crowded environment.
Wang's 50-member team was the first psychiatrists and psychologists to arrive in Chengdu on May 17. They came from specialized psychiatric hospitals, including Beijing Huilongguan Hospital, Beijing Anding Hospital, and the Sixth Hospital affiliated to Peking University.
The team spent two days at two temporary shelters in Pengzhou, before moving on to four big hospitals in Chengdu to attend to people injured in the quake.
In the past week, psychiatrists and psychologists from across the country have arrived at various disaster areas to provide psychological support.
"This is the largest ever post-disaster psychological relief effort since the founding of the People's Republic of China," Wang said.
"Our mission is to offer psychological support for people in disaster-stricken areas, including ordinary citizens, the injured, medical staff and rescue workers."
Wang's colleague, Peng Yu, a 28-year-old psychiatrist, is on another team of 20 medical professionals in Mianyang's Jiuzhou Gymnasium, which accommodates more than 20,000 of the quake's homeless.
The team set up a tent next to the gymnasium, with a large poster saying "psychological health base camp". More than 10 people visited the counselors on the first day of the team's services.
Peng saw a woman in her 40s, whose daughter was missing before being confirmed dead two days ago. The woman had not been crying, and refused to eat anything. She was highly tense. Peng diagnosed her as being in a stuporous state from psychological causes. He was planning to give her tranquilizers and sleep medication.
"Somebody supported her here by hand. As her most urgent problem was electrolyte imbalance, I prescribed her a transfusion of glucose and physiological saline solution," Peng said.
The woman was able to cry after psychological treatment. She drank a bottle of milk and walked away by herself. The doctor said he would definitely see her again soon.
More than 16,000 people affected by the quake are staying at Mianzhu's new municipal gymnasium. More than 800 are children, said Li Xianyun, a senior psychiatrist from Huilongguan Hospital. Her tent was right next to the gymnasium on the street.
"A temporary school has been set up, and local teachers and children have participated actively in drawing, singing, physical education lessons and games," she said.
"It looked almost as if the disaster was far away from us. The disaster seemed not to have written anything on most of the children's happy faces, although one could still detect sadness in some."
Li said a number of children had nightmares.
"Mama, there is an earthquake!" they would wake up at night shouting.
Other youngsters refused to talk. Some looked normal, but would cry, and lose their temper easily.
Li said she told the parents their children's behaviors were normal response to trauma.
"As long as we create a stable living environment, guarantee eating, drinking and living conditions, and let the children participate in normal social activities, they will recover slowly," the psychiatrist said.
"The general condition is better than I expected," she said.
"Although they do worry about their future, the people are generally grateful for the central government's speedy response and the People's Liberation Army's rescue efforts, which has given people comfort, and a sense of safety."
"The problem now is how to keep up with the aid work, and make psychological support consistent, to relieve the pressure on victims and give them hope for the future."
Wang said that while the majority of psychological problems at present fall under acute stress disorder, which shows right after the disaster, post-traumatic stress disorder, which can be more serious and longer lasting, will not appear until months later.
"This is just a beginning," he said. "There is so much work to be done."

Top legislator visits hospital, distribution center
(Xinhua)
Updated: 2008-05-27 09:22
CHENGDU -- China's top legislator Wu Bangguo arrived in Chengdu, capital of quake-hit Sichuan province Monday, where he visited a hospital and a distribution center of relief materials.
Wu, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, immediately went to the General Hospital of the Chengdu Military Command Area upon his arrival.
The hospital has received more than 3,000 injured people since May 12, when a 8.0-magnitude earthquake jolted southwest China and killed more than 60,000 people.
Two pupils from Beichuan county, one of the worst hit areas, Hua Meihua and Ji Lei, told Wu that they have received good treatment in the hospital and have been recovering.
"You are brave and good kids. You will recover soon. When you return to school, you must study hard," said Wu, who is also a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee,.
Wu also chatted with 81-year-old veteran Sun Menglin in the same ward.
"I have never cried when I fought in the war as a soldier, I but wept this time. I was moved by the unity among people," said Sun whose left leg was seriously injured in the quake.
The hospital is also treating several survivors buried under the rubble for more than 100 hours.
Wu shook hands with four of them at the side of their beds. "You have created miracles of life. People across the country are thinking of you and hoping you to recover as early as possible. Let's believe no difficulty will stop us once we join hands," he said.
Wu thanked doctors and nurses at the hospital for working day and night to save lives.
He then went to the Chengdu Railway Station, which has become an important distribution center of relief materials from home and abroad.
Wu talked with volunteers working at the station. "Coming from every corner of the country, you are an important force in the quake relief efforts. I hope relief materials could be delivered to thousands of needy people through your hard work."

SAD....
Author: mickey0731 Time: 2008-6-1 12:50 AM Subject: Are you ready for all these pictures stuff?
I was searching for something online this morning when I happened to come across an article comlaining that some journalists are doing too much to the victims of the earthquake. They keep on issuing some pictures of the dead and injured or interviewing the suffering people who have either lost their arms or legs or their loved ones. They oblige them to recall the moments when the disaster happened, which they would never want to face or remember. Their merciless questions are just like the salt, which is being scattered on their wounds.
We know it usually takes some time for the people who have experienced the disaster to recover both physically and psychologically. And the government has realized the fact that they need some psychological treatment, so some psychological doctors have been sent for in order to help them to get rid of the shadow of the painful experiences. Yet, it is the reporters that are doing the opposite, tearing the scars which are just beginning to heal little by little.
So I thought of the term ethnics in English. I suppose there should be ethnics in journalism. I searched it with GOOGLE. And there is really such a term: journalism ethnics. And in the evening when I was having dinner with the foreign teacher in our school, as I was talking about this, he also mentioned ethnics. And he said sometimes it is difficult to draw a line between ethnics and news report. For example, he said, once a journalist took a picture of a poor child in Africa and published it in a magazine, bringing the fact of hunger to the world, and therefore some food and care and concern back to the country. I agreed and became silent.
I don't know what to say...
What do you think?

northwest, many of the pictures are very painful. But others are satisfactory that the government and the common people are doing their best to rescue as much people as possible. Though the death toll rised very speadily, but it is still a matter of satisfaction that countless number of people are rescued. Thanks to the most modern medical facilites are already and vastly available in China, plus the huge pool of doctors and nurses, otherwise only this has a potential to contribute a lot more than the earthquick in the death toll. I remmember that when the earthquack in Pakistan happened, more people were died to due to late rescue than the earthquack.

Its all very very sad.........but at the same time it is inspiring.
In January and Februrary the Chinese had the worst winter in 50 years.....................March they had the Tibet problems..............April they had a train crash in Qingdao......and in May they had an Earthquake.
As a visitor to this country I am always amazed by the incredible nationalism of the Chinese people. Many of these disasters would cripple oother countries......but not China. They have gone from strength to strength and they all rise to the occasion. What inspirational people and I am am truely privilaged to be part of this great nation.
