there's no "perfective"  in chinese.   "了" = preterit .

for example:

1. 我去看电影 = im going to see a movie.
2. 我去看了电影=i went to see a movie.

for example:

I understand what you are saying, but why do grammar books state that Chinese has no tenses? Most grammar books state that 了 is strictly an aspect marker, and the time is determined by other words in the sentence, such as in 飞机快到了?

The preterite (also known as the aorist) is specifically a past tense with a perfective aspect.

if "了" is the last character at sentence. you could ignore it.

the first sentence can never been used by we chinese, but if a chinese teacher tell you that is right, then maybe it is right although there is no meaning because we never use in that way,you know sometimes theroy is far more complicated than real life, and sometimes a little academic which is useless for major people,so i suggest you don't use the first one
