On July 24, a ceremony to mark the establishment of Sansha city took place in Yongxing Island, Hainan province. It evoked the public curiosity to the most southern city of China, some took it as China’s Maldives, some volunteered to go there to guard the border and some thought it was a treasure island. The real Sansha still remains a mystery to most of us.
The deputy director of China’s National Institute for South China Sea Studies(NISCS), Liu Feng said the prior function of Sansha city is to undertake the duty of coast defense as it is the most southern city of China.
On May 11, 2012, military correspondents of Xinhua news agency landed on one of the Xishan Islands, Shenhang Island, which was named after the vessel ‘Shenhang’ visited here in Qing Dynasty. It appears to be a curve triangle with an area of 0.43 km2. Shenhang Island was invaded by foreign power for times. In 1974 Chinese army took back the island.

According to Hainan provincial tourism committee, Hainan is working to develop the tourism of Sansha city, including cruise travel from Haikou to Sansha. Many travel agencies have started to lay out travel plans for tourists.
