Since their beginning, people needed to believe in something. The existence of a superior ‘something’, which could be reached by personal development, was always part of the set of principles guiding the human being all his life. Religions emerged,  grew, died and they may rise again.  Today, it is a wide concept which comprises all kinds of strange sets of beliefs. While some consider that their non-conformism is cool, others have a hard time accepting that these movements really exist and they find adepts. Here is a list of 10 weird religions in the world.

1. Scientology

This religion was created by writer Ron Hubbard, in 1952 and it basically states that humans are immortal beings who forgot their true nature. Consequently, he teaches people  how to reestablish their immortability by recalling traumatic past events. He even gives his followers course materials, in exchange of a ‘small donation’, of course. This is a large movement, especially in the United States, where   scientology is a legally recognized tax-free religion.

2. Nuwabianism

This so-called religion originated in New York, as a Black Muslim community but since then, the followers detached from Islam and created a new set of believes which is not fully stable yet. The nuwabians believe that their purpose is that of counteracting ‘the spell of Leviathan’ which condemned all black people to a life of spiritual ignorance and racial indifference. The leader of the Nuwabians , Malachi Z. York,  is considered a living god. He accepted this denomination even though at times, he proclaimed himself a simple ‘guide’.

3. Nation of Yahwveh

This movement was founded in 1979 and it addresses African Americans. The leader of the religious group, nicknamed Yahweh ben Yahweh considers that blacks are the real Israelites. The followers are struggling to return to their supposed homeland, Israel. This awkward religion is unique in their beliefs because the believers consider that Yahweh ben Yahwveh is the son of God.Like other African American sects, the movement is racist, believing that the white people are devils while blacks are the chosen ones.

4. The Universe People

This weird religion emerged in the Czech Republic, having adepts in Slovakia as well. The followers believe that some extraterrestrial civilizations are communicating with their leader, Ivo Benda and with others within the group. After a shy start of telepathic conversations, they seem to be now meeting face to face! The reason of these crazy ideas is apparently the psychotic delusion of which psychiatrists believe that Benda might be suffering. The Universe people have sent messages to the Ministry of Defense asking them to protect the country from the evil reptile aliens and they send spam messages on internet trying to convince people of their beliefs. Rather hilarious and apparently harmless, this cult is considered by some potentially dangerous.

5. The Prince Philip Movement

In the southern island of Tanna, Vanuatu, the Yaohnanen people have a strange conviction: they came to the belief that Prince Philip, the consort of Queen Elizabeth II is their lost ‘son of a mountain spirit’. Their legends talk about this divine being, which traveled a long distance, over the seas, and married a powerful lady. The god of their stories is apparently, a white skinned being and brother of John Frum, another living person considered a deity by the Yaohnanen people.

6. The Oneida community

The Oneida Community was a  weird religion which does not exist anymore. It emerged in 1848 in the town called Oneida, in New York. The main belief of the cult was that Jesus had already returned to Earth in the year 70 and hence, there was the possibility to build a ‘Heaven of Earth’ , free of any sin or imperfection. The members of the community had many weird rituals, as the one of encouraging young men and older women, as well as old men and teenage girls, to enter sexual relationships. The elder partner would then become the spiritual guide of the younger one. Each one of them, even their leader, was subject to criticism from behalf of the other members and they did not believe in private property. The community lasted for 30 years and then it declined.
