Thanks, greatlady, for shedding light on those common greetings in Chinese.

Actually, I remember someone posted another thread about how he/she could not always fathom why Chinese ask those "questions".

Quite interesting.

yeah, it is part of our culture that we seemed ask too much and care to much.
apparently, it is just purely greetings.

nowadays, in cities ,due to we do not know each other , to the neighbors, sometimes we just say " Ni Hao". for meeting strangers on the way, normally I think most of the chinese don't say "yi hao " to each other.

The younger ones also already started using "Hello".

"Chi Le Mei" is still popular in rural area because people in the whole village know each other very well and they used to care in details. And this habbit will not be totally changed as we use it generation by generation.
