Instead of holding useless US dollars as reserve and looking for places to invest their reserves/savings there is an out of the box solution. Why not 'invest' in a free monthly stipend to actors, writers, thinkers, human right activists, poets, artists, religion teachers social workers etc etc - thereby investing in the country's human capital !! No need to invest abroad or keep reserves in US dollars. Over 30-40 years these people would counter balance the money mad people (BTW - its the money mad people who create the wealth to pay for these poets etc, so they are not bad) and this would create a balanced society that will not walk past a baby lying injured in the street. There are people who really dont want to get money mad and they should be nurtured so that the balance and humanity of the society is maintained. Over to you economists, there is a more paying back investment than simply ho;ding us $ reserves.

Sounds to me like you want to create a second Europe in China...

However, Dollar reserves are more a problem than an asset.
China needs to allocate its savings efficiently, if it wants to make money - and therefore needs more sophisticated and liberal financial markets. Then the country will also be able to invest into innovation, rather than buying all technologies at far too high prices abroad.
