Before 1970s, the government of North Vietnam acknowledged the China's sovereignty on islands in South China sea. In 1970s, North Vietnam overthrew the government in South Vietnam and united the whole Vietnam. Though the serious conflicts happened between China and the former Soviet Union, both of them supported the unification.

In 1970s, China began to unit U.S to resist the expansion of the Former Soviet Union. Vietnam still viewed U.S as their largest enemy. After the unification, Vietnam eventually began to slip into the clique of the former Soviet Union. With the support from the former Soviet Union, Vietnam began to invade the Cambodia to unit the whole southeast Asia and raised conflicts of land territory with China. After that, China launched war against Vietnam around the borders.

In 1980s, Vietnam supported by the former Soviet Union began to cancel the acknowledgement of China's sovereignty on islands in South China sea and began to occupy most islands there.

That time the former Soviet Union threatened China's northern territory. The former Soviet Union also had a naval base in Vietnam. China had too poor naval forces to resist Vietnamese invasion on  islands in South China sea. China also just launched Deng's reform and huge social conflicts inside of China. Deng want to solve the islands' issue in South China sea in a peaceful, not like land territory conflicts. Deng viewed the former Soviet Union in the north as the largest threat for China.
The government in Taiwan(ROC) still focused the civil war, not the loss land in South China sea, though it still stationed army in South China sea that time.

In 1990s, at last China solved the land territory conflicts with Vietnam after the collapse of the former Soviet Union in a peaceful way.

But Vietnam still continue to invade the islands in South China Sea aggressively.

Just after the collapse of the former Soviet Union, Vietnam temporarily stopped the invasion.

However, after the deteriorated relation between China and U.S after the 19-89 incident in China, in the late 1990s, Philippines began to invade the islands in South China sea, like Vietnam.

Though government in Taiwan(ROC) still stationed army in South China sea, it still focused on the civil war and did nothing to stop the invasion. The Naval Army of Mainland China was till dirty poor. The same time, Deng's China focused on economic development and vowed to solve conflicts through dialogues.

After the ongoing civil war conflicts between mainland China and Taiwan in 1996, Government in Taiwan(ROC) began to retreat naval forces in some of islands in South China sea.

In 2000s, Vietnam began to restart the aggressively invasion policies whenever China has a deteriorated relation with U.S. From the early 2000s, Vietnam began to migrant people to these islands, Vietnam began to drill oil there. The government of China still run Deng's peaceful polices through dialogues to solve the conflicts. The same time, Government of mainland China filtered the conflicts topics and silence the topics in Mainland China.

Now most of islands are occupied Vietnam. Vietnam continue to migrant people to these islands. Vietnam and Philippines try to get support from U.S. Vietnam invite the global companies to drill oils near these islands and pay pensions to these companies. Vietnam and Philippines portrait themselves as weak countries to get supports from western media. They raised the conflicts from time to time to get compromises from the sacrifice of China, once there was political instability in China, once the deteriorated relation between China and U.S.

from the perspective of relationship among states, Vietnam hadn't dare to invade China's southern territory and islands in South China sea without support of the former Soviet Union.

Why did the former Soviet Union supported the invasion? The political movements and political fights inside Communist party of China had significantly contributed to the conflicts between the former Soviet Union and China. Mao deeply believed that World War 3 would come soon. That time, the former Soviet Union even planned to bomb China's nuclear facilities. Fortunately U.S and other factors stopped the bomb.

So now the relation with U.S is really important for China. We can learn a lot from Chinese history, for example the spring and warring state period.

When china demand that U.S respect China's core interests. What's the core interest of U.S? China need to respect the core interest of U.S. China and U.S need to become strategical ally, not enemy in future. China's major decisions should not benefit itself only, but consider the interests of U.S. China need to express the will and take some actions. Sometimes, China could sacrifice a little benefits for others, but get gratitude from U.S. The strategic return is that U.S resect China's core interests and benefits.

China care about the "Face", pride and shame. U.S care about the "face", pride and shame too. China shouldn't always portrait itself as an discontent guy from U.S in global conferences.

compromises

China's core interests is not survival of the present government the present politician. But the long term interests and benefits. Some of politician need to sacrifice for the future of China. Chronicle would record their sacrifice for our China.

Supposed just after Word War 2 in 1945, if Nationalist Party (KMT) and Communist Party (CPC) made compromises, Civil war would have not taken place in China, Let alone the present territory conflict issues in South China see.

The former workers and farmers would have not revenged the former government officials, the former entrepreneur, the former landlords before 1949, not serious political movements in Mao's era, not 1996's ongoing civil war issue, not the present Taiwan issue.
