400 mil hectares of grassland, that's more than USA's 250 mil hectares of prairie!
at least that's what wikipedia estimates......

Food security is VITAL to China's future

.......as a GREAT POWER status!

All the big powers except FRANCE, are NET FOOD SUPPLIERS!
It takes a lot to rank high in the BIG 5 POWERS!

I still haven't obtain the "estimate" of

......the "free range" herd size possible on 400 mil hectares of pastureland!

Well, at least in USA, the 200 mil tonnes plus corn, soya bean are vital for the livestock feed supply to the world!
That's POWER!
Just like British Club's huge harvest in Australia and Canada!

hmmmmm

Actually China has abundant water resources, rivers, lakes, glaciers,
ground waters, etc, etc, especially glacier & lakes in Tibet, Tianshan & Kunlun, also from Yangtze ,Hwangho,Pearl River plenty of water resources,
why not start building more pipes & canals to bring water to arid lands in Inner Mongolia, Xinjiang, Gansu, Ningxia, Shensi, Shansi, etc, surely that would greatly increase grain productions in China.
As for North East China, Yalu river is a good source of water resource, why not fully tap into it?
Actually no need to desalinate sea water, China has plentiful fresh water sources.
Just build more pipes to transfer water to where it's needed most, but be careful not to tap more than 15% of the water sources, otherwise upset natural eco-system.
Please don't shoot, I'm just a babe.

If only China can pipe in water to arid lands like this,
it'll certainly increase grain production in China manifold.

Yes, should transform more arid lands to productive grain fields.
This calls for more investments in water diversion projects.
