Generally speaking, 腾迅QQ is originally a complete rip-off of ICQ. Even the name was OICQ at first, parodically named so with "O" meaning "Open". They changed the name after complaints from ICQ.

QQ has established a near-monopoly in China, with chatting at its base (QQ and RTX), and they base their revenues on business through their portal and games.

They have been largely succesful in what they are doing, but I would however recommend against any usage of QQ. One reason for this is that it is a Windows only solution; there exists clients for Mac OS X and Linux, but that only applies to the chat application; the portal games are all Windows, and so is the 聊天空 (public chat board).

Another reason is that QQ has been collaborating with the authorities and implemented a list of taboo words in an older client (subsequently removed in later versions after its discovery although still extent at server level).

A third reason is that QQ collaborates with the local authorities in Shenzhen about 实名制 (shimingzhi, real name system), where certain "group leaders" have to provide their full identity to the authorities, whether they are located in Shenzhen or not (similar 1984 Big Brother regulations apply to all individual blog users and web site authors in China, and also all mobile phone users...).

Foreigners would do best in not supporting such spineless companies. We have enough problems as it is with Google and that Redmond piece of shit called Micro$oft. Don't support the dark force.

And this brings us to today's Chinese Culture lesson...

Yinyang: , the cosmic principle of complementary opposites.

Traditional characters: 陰陽.

陰 yin, originally 今 jin (presence) over 云 (clouds), meaning just "presence of clouds", or "darkness". 阝 (fu, hill) was added later as a radical.

陽 yang, originally 昜, a 日(ri, sun) with 勿 (wu, don't) rays coming down, meaning "lightness". 阝 (fu, hill) was added later as a radical.

Simplified form: 阴阳 (月 yue, moon, and 日, ri, sun respectively with 阝 fu, hill, as radical), keeping the original pictographic meaning, but breaking the phonetic similarity.

PRO :

QQ has established a near-monopoly in China, with chatting at its base (QQ and RTX), and they base their revenues on business through their portal and games.

CON :

QQ has been collaborating with the authorities and implemented a list of taboo words in an older client (subsequently removed in later versions after its discovery although still extent at server level).

A third reason is that QQ collaborates with the local authorities in Shenzhen about ʵÃûÖÆ (shimingzhi, real name system), where certain "group leaders" have to provide their full identity to the authorities, whether they are located in Shenzhen or not.

Calimero :

A new user would not be a group leader, so though that thing is bad, the only negative, practical thing to discourage using it for a newcomer is that it has certain taboo words ... But as long as they don't track who is using those words and then come knocking, I don't see the problem ...
