It is good to have more collaboration of this sort. The promotion of Lancang-Mekong community should bring about first, harmony and peace. With that the economic prosperity. if one side makes all the money and the side remains poor then over time it will result in resentment. Such resentment is difficult to subside. The Chinese government and entrepreneurs should be sensitive to this if they desire long term relationship. Win the people's heart - on both sides of the border. Likewise encourage the Laotians to.

How does one stop people from educating their offsprings and neighbors via daily ranting? Such informal channel is a very strong tool. Handphones have limitations. Today's world has too much information (garbage) being sent around to the extent that many people deleted them without even bothering to read first.

Instead China and Indochina can put the people-to-people communication tool to good use. That is to generate the good feel of the people. Sure there are national interest to be protected. Most of the time it is this national insecurity that causes people-to-people friction. For example if the Chinese have no problem going to Laos for education and the Laotians have no problem going to China for the same vice versa, then the people will be more receptive to each other. This good-feel cannot be auto-piloted. Social designs are needed to encourage, nurture and support it. The brand Lancang-Mekong, or East Asian is insufficient. The Chinese need to understand the Laotian way of life, behavior and culture and vice versa, the Laotians too to understand the Chinese way of life, behavior and culture. One easy way to do this is through comedies that laughs at oneself that is viewed by both sides. Next is cartoons that introduces both sides. With the understanding then comes the respect for that way of life, behavior and culture (of course we aren't talking about negative culture which should be eliminated in any case). Involving one another with high frequency is good especially in education, entertainment, tourism. grooming, lifestyle and couture industries. Honestly whether one is a Chinese or a Laotian, they both are made from the same - human flesh and blood, need the mind to make their bodies function and need air, water and food for their bodies to survive. So there is little difference once we take away the race and religion classification. Not sure about Laos but in Thailand, their people clasp their hands when they greet people - that's a very pleasant practise and all should do that whenever in Thailand - to show understanding and appreciation of the culture and also to help reinforce what's uniquely good in Thailand. Then encourage Thais to reciprocate whenever in another's land. Its a mutual to do thing.

The settled national borders should be clearly taught in all Lancang-Mekong nations. Of course those still in dispute will be taught differently depending on the countries concerned. But socially the people should be steered away from being angry with the other. Its not like your neighbor have never done you any favour throughout your history. There will be pluses and minuses. Its part of living. It will not be worse than trying to use chemical to wipe away your entire race on earth. In the case of your neighbors, so far, even if one loses a little border, the community still exists but under another country that's all. The society's legacy continues albeit in another country. Of course that community will have strong resentment but it has a chance of expanding its lineage in another country. It should be recognised that at least the people are alive to extend the lineage. This is substantially better than all the people being dead without lineage and the empty land falls into murders' hands. Of course people always imagine that the best for a community is always to be in the country of their origin but if this is true why so many migrated to the US in 70s and 80s and never ever bothered to return? In fact those who migrated to US helps the US to advance US' interest instead of their country of birth. So it seems this nationalism can be twisted to suit a person's interpretation as desired. If this is the case then  nationalism isn't a truth in life rather it is a political sentiment. As long as one can identify with a country the race and religion issue can be set aside. Hence why the fight between the Lancang-Mekong community then? Disagreements should not turn into violent protests. They should be resolved in a civilised manner.

Good post. Unfortunately, there are people using the media to drive a wedge between countries to stir things up. Many of the hatred and criticism are due to misinformation and misleading news. What you suggest is helpful.

Laos is a poor country that is fast losing its sovereignty to its powerful neighbours. In the 1950s it lost a small bit of land to China. Later it was dominated by its neighbours Vietnam and Cambodia during the war in Indochina. Now it is again at the mercy of China. Chinese police patrol the river Mekong inside Laotian territory on the border with Burma and apprehend suspects and mete out Chinese "justice" to them. China also has foisted a railway upon Laos whose construction costs will break Laos' sovereignty.

Pure propaganda. Every comment that does not toe the original poster's obsequious lines becomes victim of the paper shredder.

Laos will be crushed by its foreign debt problems brought on by Chinas megalomaniacal infrastructure building scheme. The country will have to carry a 6 billion US$ debt and pay 2% interest on the loan to Chinese banks in exchange for a railway line it doesn't really need that serves China and Thailand's domestic interests.
