The annual national college entrance exam (the Gaokao) is upcoming, this year, about 9.75 million students have registered, the highest in eight years.
In recent years, reform of the examination continues to advance. Relevant departments have taken out much of the exam's unreasonable aspects such as "the extra point column," which emphasized students' comprehensive performance evaluation. These steps continue to promote the fairness of the Gaokao.

According to a CGTN report in 2017, 22 Chinese colleges created independent exams to accept students according to their criteria in 2003. These programs have allowed the school to set their standards for admitting students, including the option for a lower test score.

"The Gaokao would continue to reform exam content and emphasize overall competency. College enrollment would keep expanding to encourage the all-around and individualized development of students," Sun added.

These changes are merely cosmetic and have no impact on the outcome nor on the motivation for pupils to go on to higher education. What has been achieved thus far through so-called "reforms" is an expansion of the catchment of high school pupils: THere are more now than there ever were in the past. The result is that the academic level of students has been falling. More mediocre students arrivbe in countries other than China to pursue studies there when they have no hope to enroll in China.
