(China Plus) A special lane painted on a footpath in Xi'an dedicated to smartphone addicts has triggered discussions online in China, reports Sanqin Metropolis Daily.

The one-meter-wide, 100-meter-long track is painted in red, blue, and green, with pictures of mobile phones and the words "Special walkway for phubbers" in Chinese.
"Phubbers" is a new word coined to describe people who stare at their phone and ignore anyone or anything else around them.

Supporters think the walking path is a good way of reminding people to put their phones away and pay attention to their surroundings for their own safety and the safety of others.
But others have questioned its effectiveness. As one visitor argued, "Many people used to looking at their mobile phone while they're walking won't notice the warning."

An undeserved concession to the mindless and mindlessly inconsiderate. Also a kneejerk act os servility towards the uncivilized. Why can't anyone take the lead and show these bums how to conduct themselves in public?

What next? A car lane for the motorists who play games on their mobile phones while driving?

A special lane for so-called self driving cars isn't a bad idea you know. It should have a barrier to prevent the self driving cars from killing pedestrians or other motorists.

Phubbers don't see where they are going, how can they be expected to see the special lane?  It is a waste of resources!

The government stupidly creates special lanes for cars at the public's expense; it builds motorways that are off limits to pedestrians and bicyclists. The car owners are China's most molly-coddled, spoilt and undeserving minority. So why not create special pedestrianised streets in every city and make them wice enough to designate one lane for mobile phone fans?
