Having been to Africa many times I'd recommend that a first time traveller with a family takes an escorted tour.  There are many reasons for doing this including safety around wildlife, accommodation being of a guaranteed level and meals that are edible.

In terms of what you'll need.
Sunglasses
Sunscreen
Long camera lens on a DSLR (eg 70-210 f2.8 plus 2 x Teleconverter).
Regular DSLR wide angle to mid range zoom lens
Carbon Fiber tripod and ballhead (Markin or similar)
Passport(s)
Vaccinations and paperwork
Clothes including wet weather gear if needed.
Backpack.
Cheap smart phone (Android)

Visit Xiecheng and Qiongyou or Zhihu websites.

Except for the 'advice' from that South African, you can search genuine helpful info easily via Baid ...
- As I know, many African countries are former French colonies. You will have to speak French, or use Smartphone for translation.

You are a hugely over-informed land lubber, Jimmz!

As a Chinese, zou cannot of course imagine that Africans speak languages of their own.

And you don't know that nearly 100 million Africans hail from countries formerly held by Portugal - Mozambique, Angola, Cap Verde, and a couple more.

To maybe another 100 million Africans, Swahili is their international language of choice. They live in Kenya, Tanzania, Congo, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Malawi.

Arabic is the first language to maybe 200 million people in Africa.

and then, there are the countries where English is the official tongue, and these countries today house the majority of all of Africa. Think of NIgeria (150 million inhabitants), to mention but one.
