(Xinhua) A tree brought by French President Emmanuel Macron for his U.S. counterpart Donald Trump mysteriously disappeared over the weekend, according to local reports on Sunday.

One week ago, Washington media flocked to the South Lawn of the White House to snap photos and shout questions as the two heads of state ceremoniously shoveled dirt onto the oak sapling.
But the tree was gone from the lawn by the end of the week and news photographers took a shot of the pale patch of grass left in its place.
The oak came from Belleau Wood in northeast France, where about 2,000 American soldiers died in a World War I battle.

The disappearance of Macron's gift has become an internet sensation with mounting speculation about the tree's fate.
The White House hasn't offered an explanation. An unnamed official from the Elysee Palace said the tree is under quarantine.

Trump wanted France to build a wall around the tree instead of the quarantine.

USA has pretty tight regulations for bringing animals or plants to the country.

There is no reason why this shouldn't extend to diiplomatic gifts. They are no less likely to spread some disease or bring an additional invasive insect, than products brought by regular people.

Ignorance of these regulations wouldn't be a big surprise on the host's side - but probably the gift was suggested by some lowly official and sent over to France, which then triggered a series of protocol, with each step making it harder to change the idea.

In the end, when Macron presented the tree to Trump, for same protocol reasons he couldn't do anything else than accept it - even if he had known it was not acceptable (which he probably didn't though).

Jaaja, keep that running past your lot 4 more times and they'll ---jaja it as well

The other day I talked to some tree re-planters along a 3 km section...
That lad figured some 7% of the replants will not make it, while 1% surrender within a week.

My opinion is, that it would look rather depressing to see that OAK refusing it's new home.
The general public and All that...
