I agree with your statement. The best example of what’s wrong with China’s economic model is the garment industry which exports clothing made for Western brands. Brazil’s garment industry, on the other hand, produces clothing for its own local brands serving the domestic market and exports supermodels who are products of its fashion industry. China should promote its own fashion brands in order to build up its fashion industry.

Yes, big differences between Western economies, Brazil and China. The West subcontracts grunt work to developing nations. China is one of the latter. If it wants to be in the premier league, it has to produce for  discerning customers. But it doesn't. It produces what the political leadership wants it to produce. Therein lies the challenge: To loosen the State's grip on the supply side, let it be owned by private risk-taking investors who respond to what the market demands. IT seems Donald Trump has just pushed the CPC to take a decision it was loath to take: To allow foreign investors to own car plants wholly. Once foreign companies have to meet the Chinese consumers' needs and demands head-on, the quality of Chinese products will soar. Then these products will also meet the expectations of international buyers.

But can the CPC step back from its monopoly on manufacturing? It will have to rethink making goals such as turning the car industry into a pillar of the economy.

The Chinese people need to become more quality-conscious. They need to stop asking for "cheap, cheap" and raise questions about a product's quality.

Only some of the rich seem to care about goods with a lasting quality and a brand-name. In time their discrimination will spread throughout the nation. When Chinese start demanding high quality of their local suppliers, you can expect a turnaround.

For once, I agree with you that the Chinese State should have allowed Foreign MNCs to own 100% of their Chinese factories in the auto manufacturing industry. Cars are consumer goods best provided by private sector not State enterprises. The State only needed to set the industry standards for both the design and production of the autos as well as mandating local content requirements from Chinese suppliers. As it were, the State ended up in these JVs with foreign MNCs while Chinese private companies had to fend for themselves to compete in the marketplace. This setup favors foreign MNCs over local companies.

Now back to my example. China will account for 40% of the world’s market for luxury goods by 2025. But most Chinese nouveau riche end up buying Western luxury brands — mostly made in Europe — while Chinese garment factories churn out mass-market clothing for Western brands destined for Western markets. This is changing as costs rise in China forcing Western brands to source their clothing from garment factories in Bangladesh, Vietnam, Cambodia, etc. China needs its own fashion industry to serve its domestic market.

The problem is not the factories who could very well churn out quality goods for local customers but the economic policy favoring export industries. China should adopt economic policies that encourages the garment industry to develop its own fashion brands for the domestic market. To this end, China should develop its own fashion industry.
