It really is disappointing when Chinese misinform the public with false claims such as this:

People sprinkle water to each other to pray for good fortune during the traditional water-sprinkling festival, which is also the New Year festival of the Dai ethnic group.

The Dai people are Buddhists just like the Thais in Thailand who celebrate the same festivity called "Songkran".

The people perform this as a symbolic cleansing of their souls, to wash sins off for the new year. Nothing to do with "good fortunes".

These are citizens of China, hence Chinese. If you are a citizen in Australia, then you are an Australian.

There is no justification for Chinese to be so ignorant about the cultures of peoples other than (Han-) Chinese. The Chinese seem to only perceive these peoples as cash machines to attract anthropologically-interested tourists from abroad.

You probably don't know Chinese history: Xishuangbanna was not part of China until the early 1950s.

Its a beautiful celebration. Good to have different types of localised celebrations in China. There is beauty in diversity and even greater beauty when there is unity in diversity.
