A 78-year-old homeowner has been arrested by murder detectives after a suspected burglar who he fought in his own kitchen died of a stab wound.

The pensioner is said to have attempted to fight off an intruder armed with a screwdriver after two men broke into his suburban home in Hither Green, south-east London last night.

The homeowner is understood to have been forced into his kitchen, where a struggle ensued, leaving one of the alleged burglars bleeding from injuries to his upper body

The 38-year-old man was rushed to hospital when emergency services arrived and he later died.

The 78-year-old homeowner was initially detained on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm but was later arrested on suspicion of murder

The break-in comes amid a surge in violence in the capital, with 49 people already having died in crimes in London in 2018. Last night's death brings the toll to 50.

Police have said the second burglary suspect fled the scene before they arrived, and they are still trying to track him down.

Neighbour Clem Williams, who has lived on the road for 20 years questioned the man's arrest, asked: 'Why were the men at his house?

The man has a right to defend his home. They should let him go.'

The homeowner suffered bruising to his arms but police said his injuries are not life threatening.  He remains in custody at a south London police station

RESEARCH

Three bedroom semi-detached homes are the domestic properties most at risk of being burgled, research has revealed.

They are targeted in 46% of all domestic break-ins, according to insurance company Churchill. Four bedroom detached properties were the next most broken into, followed by terraced houses.

There were 171,527 domestic burglaries in the UK between April 2016 and March 2017, a 2% increase on the previous year. Burglars told researchers they favoured end-of-terrace houses because they were easier to scope out

I suppose in a country with an almost entirely disarmed population, they expected the old man to either simply yield to the intruder and call for police help  AFTER the intruder has left, and IF the intruder were kind enough to leave him in a condition to call for help. Then everyone could express a lot sympathy or prayers and candlelight vigils if the old man was the one who died... SMH.  This is the fundamental difference between those who wrote the constitution of the UK and the USA. Now they want the law abiding citizens of the USA to disarm and be in such similar condition... The right to defend one's life and property is supposed to be a fundamental right. Good legal support for the homeowner and enough publicity for such cases will deter atleast a few crooks.

This is certainly one case in support of laws for law-abiding people's rights to own and use a weapon to defend themselves.

Why doesn't the guy have contents insurance and an alarm system? And non lethal ways of protecting his home. You should not be able to murder a person for break and enter. USA is a degenerate society and most do not want to be like those gun loving cowards.
